In the first-ever referendum in the country involving farmers, more than 6,000 land-owners from 22 Raigad villages made their views on a special economic zone known on Sunday.
Judging by the mood of the farmers in the command area of the Hetwane irrigation dam, it appears that the Reliance group will have its task cut out to acquire land for its multi-crore SEZ project in the Konkan area.
"Don't ever make an attempt to bribe us. Even if Reliance offers us Rs one crore per hectare, we will not part with our land for the SEZ project. We are determined to ensure that the SEZ project does not come up in the Konkan belt. Our motto is 'SEZ hatao, Konkan bachao'," Sadashiv Mhatre said immediately after submitting his opinion in the Mothe Bhal zilla parishad school.

I completely support 'SEZ hatao, Konkan bachao' anti-SEZ movement. Can't see kokan's green belt converting into a electronic belt.

I wouldn't like to see it turn into an industrial zone either but what finally matter is what the local people think
However the empire will strike back. You can see it already happen by the government threatening to turn the area into a no-development zone... which means government will ban farmers from any activity other than agriculture.
A similar thing happened in a neighboring state. People there opposed giving up their land for a large hydro electricity project. The state government over there subjected the area to prolonged load-shedding till finally the fed up people gave their land to the project.
On a side note it would be wise to consider the problems of land shortage now. After all opposition to industrial projects now could in future turn to opposition to housing projects, power projects, water projects etc as well...
