Anything and everything by P L Deshpande is my fave (i have to say my family's too).
Meticulous characterisation, excellent enviroment and brilliant mixture of humour, wit and also empathy have made his works unparalled and unforgettable.
He put his heart and soul into his works and through them we were able to see the hearts and souls of the Marathi people.

But two top of my mind are Battatyachi chaal by P L Deshpande (Pula) and Ti Phulraani which was actually a translation by Bernard shaw's play "Pygmalion".
What a play that was, i have never seen any charactor on the stage delivering 10 mins of animated performance as good as MANJU .. bhakti barve was queen of marathi drama. Nobody after that could do justice to the character of Manju.

Recently I read Ramnagarkar's Ramnagari. thx to Punchtantra again :)Best book so far among whatever less I have read.
Its ramnagarkar's life story. His childhood, his passion for music and drama,His marriage, chawl's life, caste system and the Mumbai during that time.
Its hilarious. But actually the situation are very sad ,humiliating. But They are written in such a manner that you would falloff from your chair laughing and in the end you will say "Shit This Is Sad".
