A massive fire broke out at Shastri Nagar slum in Bandra (W) on Monday afternoon reportedly following a cylinder blast in one of the homes. The blaze, that swept across 100 hutments and industrial units, was doused within 20 minutes, but it managed to destroy the entire stretch and render many homeless. Though there were no casualties, several people were injured.
Incidentally, the Shastri Nagar slum, along with the neighbouring Maharashtra Nagar slum that houses around 1,000 residents is slated to be developed under the slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) scheme. "There has been a slight delay in implementing the scheme. Everything has been sanctioned. We are just waiting for the formalities to get over so that we can start the project,'' said Mohammed Lokhandwala, chairman of Lokhandwala Infrastructure.
