While politicians are vying with one another to hog the limelight as the "protector of Marathi interests", libraries in the city meant for readers of Marathi books are closing down.
Out of 29 Marathi libraries run by the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya (MMGS), 11 have closed down in the past two years.
In the past two months, the libraries at Dadar and Abhyudaya Nagar, Parel, have shut down because of insufficient number of members and lack of infrastructure.
Similarly, eight more libraries are expected to pull their shutters down soon.

आज आपण किती जण मराठि वाचतो, मराठिच काय? वर्तमानपत्र आणि मासिक ह्याच्या पलीकडे लायब्ररित जावुन पुस्तक आणने व नंतर ती वाचने ईतका खटाटोप कोण करतो. खर तर, लायब्ररिच्या फार आधि मुंबईतुन वाचकवर्ग कधिच निघुन गेलाय. मग आता लायब्ररिच्या स्टाफपेक्षाहि कमी मेंबर असलेली लायब्ररि कशी चालवायची ?
म्हणुन माझ्या मते हि चिंताजनक बाब असली तरी त्याहुनही जास्त सरळ "डिमांड अँन्ड सप्लाय" च उदाहरण आहे.
आता एक चांगलि बातमी, मनसे बांद्रामधे पब्लीक लायब्ररिज चालु करणार आहे, कारण त्यांच्याकडे त्या चालू ठेवण्यासाठि पुरेसा पैसा आहे, आता फक्त एकच अडचण .. मराठि वाचक कुठे शोधायचा ?

The American Congress has asked for 600 rare books from the marathi granth sangrahalay library for the purpose of microfilming, as the US wishes to make these books available to students of some of its universities.

I want to share with you guys something.I must confess I started reading very late. I had joined liabrary to read english novels mainly.I used to pick mainly indian authors but english books .
After few days my librarian kaka said to me "Tumhi tarun mandali liabrary kade yetay hey baghun far bara vatla. Ek suggest karu ka bala.Tujha books cha choice baghun mala vatta tula marathi books jasta advad til.It surprised me to see that he was studying my choice. He was the one to suggest "Kale pani by savarkar to me".Tyane var jadun eka koparyatun dhulit padle la te pushtak mala dila.Vach ani sang kasa vatla."
I m so thankful to him and will always be.Bcoz of him I have read few but really good marathi books.I have enjoyed reading every book.He used to keep books for me."Aaj he vach next time sathi shodhun thevto pustak ek tujha karta." he used to say.:)
