The Congress-led Democratic Front government in Maharashtra is likely to make singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in government schools. This is a sequel to an assurance given by the state government to BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar in the state legislature.
The proposal, expected to come up before the state cabinet on January 15, has been opposed by minister of state for education Hasan Mushrif. Mushrif told TOI, "Muslims in this country have accepted Jana Gana Mana... as national anthem. Many years ago, when Vande Mataram was made compulsory, there was lot of opposition from Muslims and the government had to retract its decision. I hope that the state government will take Muslims into confidence before making singing of Vande Mataram compulsory."
