The mad scramble for admissions to colleges may be a thing of the past. On January 1, the University of Mumbai expanded the number of seats by a whopping 50% this year.

The varsity’s new year bonanza means that an unprecedented number of new institutions—226—have got the green signal for its affiliation.

So far, 501 colleges were affiliated to the 150-year-old varsity, with a total student intake of about five lakh. With the new affiliations, the seats for the academic year 2008-’09 are likely to go up by an additional 2.3 to 2.5 lakh.

According to officials, this expansion is the result of the record number of applications for affiliations this year. The university has never in its history received these many applications in a single year.

The university’s Management Council approved the applications on January 1 and forwarded them to the state government for its stamp of approval.
