Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s announcement on posting licensed porters as railway gangmen and in other Group D posts may have evoked cheer, but whether the 6,500 such posts lying vacant in the five divisions of Central Railway (CR) in Maharashtra would be filled up by them remains a question.

For, about 20 lakh applications for these posts from candidates are waiting to be screened by the railway board for a year now.

Divisional Secretary for National Railway Mazdoor Union N Haridasan said that not a single application has been screened yet by the railways. “The officials say that somebody from the railway board should screen the applications as the pressure from interested parties to get in their candidates is tough to handle,” he said.
