If you want a job as a class four employee at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), start running for it. Run as fast as you can, for you have to cover four kilometres in 17 minutes flat.

Incredibly, that’s what the civic body has put as a criterion at a recruitment drive it is currently conducting, to fill the backlog of fourth-class employees.

The recruitment process is currently under way at the BMC’s Bhandup Complex (water purification plant) for some 15,000 posts in the reserve categories. Out of these, 1,300 posts are for labourers alone, and for them, the BMC has received over 35,000 applications.

It is due to this large number of applications, that the BMC decided to set a tough benchmark, a senior official said.
