Investors have been firmly told that Marathi-speaking candidates should be given top priority for employment, finance minister Jayant Patil said in the legislative assembly on Thursday.

"By Marathi, we mean those who have been residents of Maharashtra for 15 years or more and know Marathi," he added.

"The Maharashtra government has been signing a number of MoUs. We have told the investors that they will have to select Marathi-speaking candidates on a priority basis. The district industrial centres (DICs), which act as the nodal agency for the government, have been asked to see that the official instructions in this connection are followed in toto," the finance minister stated.
