In a decision that would appear to flatter the MNS and Shiv Sena that have been agitating against North Indians in Mumbai, the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government on Monday said it intends stricter implementation of policies that give preference to locals for jobs framed since 1968.

The government announced its decision to come up with state and district level committees for implementation of preference for locals in jobs, a move that political observers here see as a pre-election exercise to woo back the Marathi voters who might be drifting to MNS.

The earlier government resolutions (GR) that would be implemented strictly were issued by Congress governments in 1968, 1970, 1973, 2005 and 2007.
