After Raj Thackeray’s campaign for Marathi as a compulsory language in CBSE and ICSE schools, even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a writ that all teachers in its schools will have to clear a 100-marks test in Marathi, failing which their increments will be withheld.
A circular to this effect was send to all BMC run schools last month. Most school teachers said the circular is unfair and unreasonable.
“We have already cleared a 50- marks Marathi paper when we cleared our SSC examinations, yet we are being asked to appear for this test. What is the logic of this test?” enquired a teacher from a Urdu medium school in H West ward.
The circular clearly states that the increment of the teachers who have not cleared this test will be withheld. When asked about this circular, BMC education officer Arun Thackeray said it was being implemented as per rules of the state government, that all government employees must know Marathi. “This is being done as per the instructions of the government. We are not implementing this on teachers who know Marathi,” said Thackeray.
