Concerned over the recent poaching of migrant birds in Navi Mumbai, the forest department has decided to provide protection to the birds that visit Maharashtra in winter.

The department is planning to appoint a forest guard at the creek where the birds hang around during their stay. It has also asked the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to provide a universal access number (such as 100 and 101) to save the killing of migrant birds and prevent the violation of forest laws.

About 133 types of foreign birds visit the state in winter and they return in February — the onset of summer.
