BANGALORE: In a move that could ignite local emotions, the government on Monday appointed Andhra Pradesh MLC Rajyalakshmi as syndicate member for the Karnataka Women University at Bijapur, while most of other appointees are either Congress leaders or their followers.

The appointment of Rajyalakshmi has raised eyebrows with Kannada activists threatening to launch an agitation if her appointment was not withdrawn. Former MLA and activist Vatal Nagaraj said that the appointment was a “shame on Kannadigas.

The Governor should know and respect our sentiments. Is there any dearth of qualified candidates in Karnataka for the post,” he asked and threatened to launch an agitation.

Kannada Rakshana Vedike also threatened to launch an agitation if the government did not drop her name from the list. KRV president Narayana Gowda said that they would continue the agitation until Rajyalakshmi was dropped.

Dr S R Patil, a former professor of Karnataka University, Dharwad, was the other member appointed for the Women’s University.

Meanwhile, the other appointments to syndicate members clearly establish Congress’ hand in nominations. Of the two members appointed to Mysore University, one is a former Congress MLC C Ramesh, who is a follower of former minister H K Patil, while the other nominee is a Congress worker N S Gopinath of Vidyavardhaka College in Mysore.

For Mangalore University, P V Mohan and S V Sharma have been appointed, while former bureaucrat and BDA Commissioner Jayaker Jerome have been made a syndicate member of Gulbarga University
