A commuter who was fined by a ticket-checker of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking in March 2007, fought against the administration when he found out that he had been wrongly charged. On Wednesday, he was awarded a cheque of Rs 50 after he made BEST realise its mistake. Interestingly, the commuter has spent more than Rs 500 till date.

Shyam Bhanushali, a Dahisar resident, was travelling by a BEST bus between Nagothane and Borivli on March 30, 2007. He said, “I had bought a ticket worth Rs 40. At 9:30 pm, a ticket-checker at Borivli station said my ticket was for March 29 and no longer valid and fined me Rs 50.” Bhanushali wrote to the BEST administration and provided copies of his ticket and a receipt. After a month-long investigation, he was told that he would be given a refund.
