Nothing to take away from abhinav bindra, who has made india proud. But would a normal indian sportsperson enjoy the same facilities which abhinav enjoyed.Even rajyavardhan rathore who won a silver last time was from a military background.
What would it take so that we get the medals from the government sponsored initiatives?

i dont understand how we can compare ourselves to the chinese. we look at chinas sporting sucess and say we should be in similar position because of our population.
pls. consider chinas 'one-child' policy while looking at their sporting success.. what percentage of indian parents would dare to risk sending even one of their children to make a career in sports ?

Interesting point about the 'one-child' policy. One must admire the daring of those chinese parents who sent their only kid into sports

Matter of fact is that we cannot be compared to china. Cricket, the sport which India is passionate about is hardly played by 10 countries. As such India does not have a sports culture. Only reason parents want their children to take up sports is so that they can make billions of rupees like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Sania Mirza etc.
Nowadays Children don’t like to play in the societies, instead they join an academy. These seasonal sports academies are completely commercialized and make the most of the money which the wannabe billionaire parents are ready to shell out. A couple of days ago I saw a group of kiddies copying a singing reality show in the society. There was a little girl pretending like an anchor who was calling the other kiddos one by one for a performance!!!!. Man….Thats where we used to play hide and seek, langdi etc once we finished our cricket.
It is the parents and the schools who have to take this initiative so that every child at least plays some sport of his choice.Children should be encouraged to play in the buildings.Regular Inter school tournaments have to be played to identify the talent at the school level. That’s where the academies setup by the government can play a role to provide scholarships etc.

thats an interesting stat indeed. If thats the case there would have been some concrete steps which china must have taken to change the situation.
BTW one more good news is wrestler Sushil kumar has won a bronze medal.Good thing is we have bettered our tally from the last olympic. The best thing would be to up there.. right amongst the top.

They certainly went in with a well thought out strategy of playing to their strengths
They started by strongly focusing on sports more suited to their small physique - gymnastics, diving, table tennis, badminton, archery...

Indians are so much self satisfied bunch of loosers.. without putting a shred of effort, how can we expect our players to get medals?.. Instead of making some feeble half hearted efforts at training these guys, why dont they call back all of them, at least it will save us from humiliation..The government should be ashamed that they dont care about these athelets and gold medalists..
Abhinav Bindra's medal is purely his own, i wish him good luck for the next olympics.. He is gonna snatch another gold due to his own hard work and his own investment.. Shame on the GOI..
