In a bizarre proposal, the DB Marg police have suggested that the entire Girgaum chowpatty coastline be fenced to prevent another 26/11 type attack.

The proposal, tabled before a high court-appointed committee on Thursday suggested covering the 1.2-km stretch of the Chowpatty with wire ropes. We get regular security alerts. There is a need to scan entry and exit points to the beach front. Moreover, with limited staff, it becomes difficult to man the crowded beach, said a senior official.

But members of the committee, which was formed following a public interest litigation against encroachments on the beach, held back the plan temporarily. The beach is a well-known tourist spot where thousands of tourists come every day. Putting up the fence will spoil the beach and obstruct the view of the sea. It will also restrict the use of the beach for the public, said a member. The DB Marg police in its proposal claimed they were fed up with the repeated instances of people getting perilously close to the sea, especially during high tide.
