The merry journey of marathi comedy started in the year 1930 with Damuanna Malvankar, the original Chimanrao whose trademark squint (``he seemed to have one eye on present troubles and one on future travails'') only enhanced his flair for comedy. Further he teamed up with another natural actor master Vinayak in a film scripted by the celebrated Acharya Atre, and what followed was the laugh riot, Brahmachari. Another humorous marathi play given by the team of multifaceted personality P.K.atre and Damuaanna was “Moruchi mavshi” in 1940. “Viccha majhi poori kara” in late 1960 brought another comedy wave in marathi theater in which Marathi’s Charlie Chaplin, Dada khondke was first launched by another marathi’s great comedy writer Vasant sabnis who also wrote for Dada’s first movie as director Soungadya, Ekta jeev sadashev etc. Another great personality in marathi literature and theater who contributed in this laughing riots was Pula deshpande whose humour is hilarious to the hilt, his character-sketches are compassionate to the core.

The old school of comedian in marathi movies also included Raja Paranjape, the poker-faced Raja Gosavi, whose comic timing was impeccable, the irrepressible Sharad Talwalkar who excelled in his old-man roles and Vasant Shinde, known for his rustic characterisation.

Next era of comedians who changed the face of marathi movies from typical rona dhona to laughing riots was Dada Khondke’s from his 16 silver jubilee movies, Ashok saraf and Lakhshimikant Berde etc and Marathi comedy as far theater and even television was concern was safe in hands of amazing performers like Dilip Prabavalkar(who played chimanroa after Dammuanna and GangadharTipre) , Vijay chavan (The Moru chi mavshi for new generation like us),Machindra kambli who gave humor a malvani touch,Prashant Damle etc.

Chimanrao’s was a character –sketch of a great marathi humorist Chintaman Vinayak joshi . This character became so famous that people started calling him Chi.V joshi instead of C.V joshi . Dilip prabavalkar is not only a great actor but also an equally gr8 writer. Vasuchi sasu, Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre and many other such funny characters are sketched by him. Vasant sabnis ,Pula ,Pk.Atre ,Ga.di.ma, Kolhatkar, etc had different and very unique style of humor and whose each and every creation become masterpieces. These people also showed to world that Comedy is the best way to address serious issues in society.

It’s so difficult to write about these gr8 people in few words. Did I miss someone? I hope not. Why don’t u guys comment a little more on there books, movies, dramas, serials and characters which they played or you loved.
