To: The Government of Maharashtra, Private FM Channels operating in Maharashtra
The FM radio channels currently operating in Pune are providing their programmes primarily in Hindi. Radio Mirchi provides about 10 - 15% of non prime time entertainment programmes in Hindi but announcements & advertisements are not in Marathi. Radio Mirchi provides no entertainment programmes in Marathi but announcements & a few advertisements are in what they consider is Marathi. In summary, these channels do not consider the existence of Marathi speaking people who constitute 75+ % population in the area of their coverage in and around Bangalore.
The FM radio channels forget that they have been provided licenses for localized programming. They also forget that they operate in the state of Maharashtra which is one of the states of Union of India, that India has a federal system and states have been formed on linguistic basis.
Private FM channels provide wholesome entertainment and information in the language of the state in other states of Union of India (examples: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh).
Listed below are a few instances which indicate the discrimination against Marathi & Maharashtrians by these FM radio channels:
1. The channels always air Hindi film songs, ghazals & pop songs but rarely air Marathi film songs, folk songs, light music and classical music.
2. Weather updates, traffic updates and health tips are primarily in Hindi with a sprinkling of English in between. The common man of Pune who needs the same information has been denied this just because of his Marathi origin. How is someone who does not understand Hindi/English supposed to cope? Does he not have the right to hear songs/general programming in Marathi?
3. Most of the Radio Jockeys (RJ) of these channels don't speak Marathi and among the ones who speak, speak Marathi in a ridiculous manner.
The intention of these channels is to expand the market for Hindi films and Hindi music in Pune. Hence there is a deliberate attempt to deny entertainment in Marathi & diminish the market for Marathi film and music industry. These channels by airing Hindi programs, giving updates in Hindi have been imposing Hindi on the common man of Marathi. This goes against the federal structure of Indian Union and denies Maharashtrians the right to protect their language & culture in their native state.
We the undersigned protest the discrimination by Radio Mirchi (93.3 MHz) against Maharashtrians. We have been hurt by the attitude and activities of these Radio channels. We demand that these channels stop the discrimination against Maharashtrians & stop the imposition of Hindi on Maharashtrians, stop the denigration of Marathi in its own state.
We demand that all the FM channels operating in Pune provide entertainment & information to people of Pune in the language of the land, Marathi.

None of this is discrimination or bias. Private FM channels are exactly that - private. Means, no government ownership or stake.
So they operate according to what brings them a profit.
If FM channels are playing Hindi and English music, that is because they think that the market is among those who want to hear Hindi and English music. They may be wrong, but that is what they think.
The correct way is not to run to the government for everything. If Maharthi songs are what will bring them a profit, they will play Marathi songs. If in Pune people want to hear Ugandan songs and that will make a profit, they will play songs from Uganda too.
So, lets take each point.
1. A large number of FM listeners listen to FM channels while driving. Along car car drivers of Pune, what is the percentage of Marathi-speaking people?
2. Pune has 75 % Marathi speaking people as you said. How many of them want to listen to Marathi-songs while driving?
3. They make money from the ads. Are the Marathi-song lovers (who drive cars and want to listen to Marathi songs and announcements) advertisement-friendly? Do Marathi people generally listen to ads and buy products advertised? If not, the channels will collapse instantly.
4. Has any survey been conducted on how audience in Pune will react to a lot of Marathi songs? Or do they want to listen to Himmesh Reshammiya and Bollywood?
5. Do Marathi-speaking people to listen to marathi programmes in Pune often? What kind of programs? Music? or News? (FM does not carry news)
I don't have the answers to these - and probably you don't, either. But I suspect the FM companies have the answers. And thats why they are not playing Marathi songs.
Maybe, the right thing is to find out if the Marathi population even wants Marathi songs on FM radio first. That will be a start. Everything else can come afterwards.
The private FM stations (like all private companies) are usually clear on such details. but sometimes they are wrong too. So why not ask for a full study and data analysis, and then start protesting?

Iam a maharashtrian and till recent past i never had problem with MTV kaamwali Bai being potrayed as maharashtrian after all we created that character. Very professional, hard working, trustworthy, childrens love them, they raised many kids few became sachin tendulkar .. her nanny is still famous as sachhuchi bai. Ramesh pardhe is a watchmens son sachin use to practice his straight drive with a wet tennis ball. You will find one story in each mumbaikar's house. Iam proud of them.
Problem starts when Maharashtrians starts looking at this as a inferiority or insult or something like that. Kaamwali Bai, drivers, watchmen, office peons all such jobs are always dominated by locals. If you go to england you will always have a english guy or a girl behind the bars, in the hotels cleaning linens, london is a different case .. but then i don't want mumbai to become london there won't be any maharashtrians here then.
Now about FM. Radio Mirchi and others are here to do business and not to preserve culture or teach marathi. They will bajao what sells, let it be himesh reshmiya.
There are two ways we can go about it, protest the discrimination against something which is already famous (sounds easy and political) or promote things like AIR-DTH, Worldspace 110 Frequency which are dedicated marathi channels but not famous at all (sounds like business and hard work).
I personally enjoy swarmala and i don't know which frequency it comes on as thats the default channel at my house. And i seriously don't care about what FM plays .. after all we made them famous.
We are not proud of what we already have and we want others to preserve our identity, music, culture and chaddi.
But i will still like to rest my case.

Iam not saying all maharashtrians females are bais iam saying most bais are maharashtrians in mumbai. Which is very logical and correct situation you will see whichever state you go.
I agree to your point of mahrashtrian getting negotiated, but i don't agree to your idea of protest. I will continue listening to swarmala and talk about it to others. FM i don't listen, because i don't like .. not because they don't play marathi.

The petition you have - it should be for convincing Maharashtrians to request the FM stations for playing Marathi. Not for forcing them. If enough people ask for Marathi songs, they will come. If a few people ask and force FM stations, they will play them - I think that will be the least popular hour on FM!
I personally don't think most Maharashtrians are interested in FM at all.
