The violence in the city indirectly claimed the life of a kindergarten student in Borivli. Pratham Jain (5), who was dropped home early after his school shut for the day anticipating trouble in the wake of MNS leader Raj Thackeray's arrest, was killed in a hit-and-run mishap outside his building premises.

Pratham, an only child, lived with his parents on the fifth-floor of Akash Ganga building at Gorai. His father, Nilesh Jain, is employed with a Marathi daily.

Pratham was enrolled in junior KG in Swami Vivekanand school.

According to neighbours, Pratham's mother dropped him at the building gates around 1 pm, where a private van picked him up for school. The little boy would return around 5 pm, when his mother once again waited at the building gates to take him home.

On Wednesday, however, the school was declared shut since the management was anticipating trouble in the city. Pratham and his schoolmates didn't need to alight from the van at all since the school was shut, and were ferried back home in the same vehicle around 1.30 pm. The van driver dropped Pratham at the entrance of his building and left.

Half an hour later residents spotted him lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. His mother was informed and she rushed downstairs and carried the child to the Mangalmoorti hospital nearby, where doctors declared him dead.

The Borivli police conducted a panchnama on the spot and took the body to the Borivli post-mortem centre where forensic experts said that severe head injuries had caused the boy's death.
