Mumbaikars could soon find relief from the crowded suburban trains in the form of state-of-the-art magnetic levitation (or maglev) trains running at speeds of up to 300 kmph.
A senior state government official said: “The proposed high-speed rail is for 6 routes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including potential maglev lines.
The distances for each route would be between 20 km and 50 km. Besides, a passenger-cum-freight railway corridor between Mumbai and Nagpur is also part of the project.”
The consultants would furnish the final cost estimates and submit a feasibility report. The project will be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis.
Experts say a maglev train would typically cost Rs 300 crore per km. In China, a maglev train operates on a 30-km line and achieves a top speed of 501 kmph.

'Rs 300 crore per km' !!
So we will be paying tolls and tax surcharges for it till like 7 generations... ?? And for what... only for the very few people who will be able to travel on these trains.
Just which country are the 'consultants' from anyway ?
If the Maglev trains were economically viable then wouldn't they have already been implemented in the rich western countries ?
Shouldn't we rather learn from experience of China where the Shanghai Maglev Train is a flop and is finding it difficult to recover daily operating costs... forget total project costs.

I read that Maglev requires 300 mtrs free space on either side of the tracks... can we imagine having even 3 mtrs of free space on either side of the railway tracks in Mumbai :-)
magnetic levitation : Kiran has stolen my idea and given it to these guys... kiran i need 50% of the money that you got.

Your idea i faintly remember now was about magnet tubes .. where u enter at one end and get sucked at the other end and you abandon the idea after i told you that people might get killed like pests at the other end. Why don't you elaborate more on your idea iam sure it was unique and unheard.

Goverment keeps announcing new projects to keep peoples attention diverted aways from old incomplete projects ;-)
Chinese politicians keeps declaring such grand projects to project that they are a superpower while Indian politicians keep declaring such projects to ensure constant source of income for themselves...

yup I completely agree with kiran and what relief from suburban trains last so many years they are talking of making all trains 12 cars in central side nothing has been done.Itna bhi invesment inse nahi hota adn wht big dreams they r seeing.
Btw this is what I read abt maglev trains in china People in Shanghai have openly protested against the introduction of Maglev trains because a large number of them had to surrender their residential and commercial properties for the project. Even countries like japan, australia ,germany and US have tested it but they have not yet implement bcoz they are Skeptical abt its cost effectiveness. So dont u think we have more reasons than these countries to be skeptical.
Well this proposal is being pushed through by state finance minister Jayant Patil with chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has virtually latching on to it.
Uff....:(

It is like this, Sena will focus on selling open spaces, digging existing roads, build toilets, renovate heritage buildings and make money.
Congress or ruling party will bring in international projects, modernise dharavi, Sell agricultural land to big corporates and call it India Shining.
Other weak players like samajwadi party and MNS enguage themselves into protesting whatever Sena and Congress does .. give us illusion of democracy and control and make their share.
Some years ago, it was like Mohammed ali road - dawood, chinchpokli, byculla - arun gawli, thane .. ulhasnagar - bhai thakur, matunga to andheri - naik gang .. colba - dosa gang. I guess it was better.
