To talk the political language of 80's Sunday was a RADA day. Clash between Samajwadi Party (Abu Asim Azmi's) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party workers. Raj Thackrey recently is on his full throttle against north indians (senior thackrey style) and some of his remarks against amitabh and SABU azmi (thats what he call Abu Azmi) were provoking.
He is not happy with amitabh because mumbai made him superstar and he is ding all social work in UP. He was never happy with Mr. Azmi and now he replied his Lathi distribution comment saying he will distribute swords. He says Chatt Puja is power display by north indians in mumbai, this is surely provoking for both north indians and mumbaikars.
What do you guys think, is this for pure political milege or Raj thackrey is really angry about North Indians.

Chetan it is making sense what you are saying.
But one thing I want to add here. For last 50 years we have seen North Indians filling the lands of Maharashtra with their population. Why Maharashtra or a local should pay for the 5 to 6 children in their family and sent here for work. They are not paying tax. The crime is increasing like anything. They are into small small villages of Maharashtra and taking jobs of locals. Lowering the life style of the common people by doing lot of work in less money.
One thing I know I have talked to these people and found that many are having lots of land out their but they don't have intension to cultivate them. I am educated and believe in equal rights. Our country is growing like anything, but if these people are not giving share of common person of Marathi Manus, then these things will happen. I am not part of any Political Party. But these sentiments are there in all Maharashtrains.

Mangeshweb the sentiments you talk off are very natural and well justified to a big extent.
The situation is similar to this say there is kind and loving mother (i.e Mumbai City) with its natural son ( i.e. Maharashrian Sons of Soil ) but the mother adopts distant cousins (i.e. Gujratis, South Indians , North Indians etc etc). And this distant cousins eat into the food of the natural son some time subtly(i.e. by working at much lower income rates) and some time through force(i.e. Dadagiri). So the natural sons anger and retaliation is quite justified. So its time everybody draws a decent line to relationships !

Karnataka's Kannada quotas are APPLICABLE TO BOTH. I have checked this out. Under COMDEK (Association of Dental, Medical and Engineering colleges of Karnataka) the 30 % quota is applicable to all colleges which come under COMDEK. So much for that.
These reservations are applicable to all government-owned as well as government-aided colleges in these states. N.B. Both owned and aided. In North and East India, most colleges fall under that category. So much for this point.
In West Bengal, when the WB government took the decision to throw open their engineering colleges (and Bengali students) indirectly to competition from other states, as many as 40-50 % of the seats were taken by these non-Bengal students. In response, the WB government barred, yes BARRED non-Bengali students from taking admission into engineering colleges in West Bengal. I didn't hear a peep from you or people of your ilk when this happened. If it happens tomorrow in Maharashtra, the cosmpolitanism, merit, hard work, energy song will be at its cresendo. So much for this point.
In Tamil Nadu, you may or may not be aware that there is 69 % reservation in all government, government-aided as well as private colleges. True enough that is this caste-based. HOWEVER, ONLY people from these castes in TAMIL NADU will benefit. In other words, a Dalit/OBC/ST/SC from MH cannot get a seat in Tamil Nadu under these quotas. Hence, quotas are caste-based: but ONLY those castes which are NATIVE to that state. SO much for this point.
As far as seats in educational institutions are concerned, the LAST thing Maharashtra needs is more educational instituions.
(An additional point: SC's and STs and OBCs from our state CANNOT get any seats in other states under those quotas. However, the students from these states can get seats in OUR STATE under these quotas. Perhaps this is a very fair position. They can get seats under SC/ST/OBC quota here but NOT US there.
Further point: The issue of domicile. In Maharashtra, getting domicile is very easy. Or at least was until I last checked. In fact, it was as easy as passing the XIIstd examination from our state.
In All other states, including even tiny Goa, the domicile was of 15 years duration. Yes, you had to live for 15 years to become a domicile. Here, you are treated as a Maharashtra state candidate if you just pass the XII exam from Maharashtra, not even Maharashtra BOARD, even CBSE and ICSE is ok. In all other states, the sitation is very clear: 15 year domicile is a must. Further examples:
In West Bengal, West Bengal State Board Candidates (WBSEB) are compensated for their board being stingy with marks vis a vis ICSE/CBSE. How do they do this? By cutting ICSE/CBSE candiates by 15 % in many courses. In other words, a WBSEB candidate with 60 % is treated on par with a CBSE candidate with 75 %. Or a WBSB boy with 55 % is on par with an icse 70 %.
This ensures that the sttae board candiates are never at a disadvantage vis a vis other boards. Even though Maharashtra BOard is also stingy with marks, no such compensation is given to the Maharashtra Board guys. THey have to compete when West Bengal students do not have to; the situation is therefore that ICSE and CBSE students get seats because 90-95 % marks are becoming as common in CBSE as ducks for Ajit Agarkar. When Boards are stingy with marks, they should give some compensation viz a viz other board candidates who are not stingy. IN Bengal they do so. IN MH, they do not.
Furthermore, in all boards, state and central, you only need to pass TWO languages in Xth std, study and pass them. In Maharashtra, we are the one and ONLY state where candidates from a STATE BOARD have to study and pass 3 languages. In no other STATE board (or EVEN CBSE and ICSE!) do you have to pass 3 languages. This 3 languages poses a much greater burden on students than their counter parts from other states. In Bengal/TN/AP/Assam, only 2 languages are needed to be studied in Xth std. In CBSE and ICSE, 2 languages are required (IN fact, CBSE/ICSE do not make Hindi compulsory in Xth std, (so-called national boards!) but our state board does.
FYI, I am giving the break-up of engineering seats state by state (roughly) as per the AICTE website:
These are approximately as follows:
Maharashtra: 55,000
Tamil Nadu: 80,000
Andhra Pradesh: 65,000
Karnataka: 45,000
Kerala: 28,000
West Bengal: 13,000
Gujarat: 12,000 seats
Orissa: 10,000 seats
Bihar: 3,000 seats
It is quite clear from the above, the shortfall in not in MH, TN, or AP. It is very clearly in Kerala, Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Gujarat and other such states. Hence, rather than asking Maharashtra's politicians to open more third-rate colleges, it would preferable to ask the Mayawatis and others of Northern and Eastern India to open more engineering in THEIR states. We have ENOUGH engineering/medical colleges in our state.
An additional point. You will notice that AP, TN have more seats than KA, MH. Yet, why is students flock to study in MH, KA and NOT AP, TN? They have more seats right?
The reason is simple. The absence of a quota in MH and presence of a relatively small quota in KA and means that despite having LESS seats, MORE outstate candiates head to these states and the local people end up getting edged out.
In Tamil Nadu, the 69 % quota just does not allow this to happen. Over and above this, the language and other issues ensure that other than some Telugus, engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu are not affected.
In AP, the story is different. IN AP, the government has barred the entry of non-locals into engineering colleges by saying that ONLY those people who take the EAMCET (i.e AP'S MH-CET)are allowed to take admission. On the other hand, in Maharashtra, there is a 15 % QUOTA (as always, quotas are fine as long as they are not for Maharashtrians) for AIEEE/CBSE PMT candidates. 15 % works out to 15 %/55,000 equals=7,500 seats. That's a lot of seats which go to AIEEE candidates. Neither AP nor TN nor KL nor KA nor GJ has ANY such quota for non-locals. As it is, AIEEE quota is a quota for people from other states in India (which is perfectly all right). THis 15 % quota is unique to MH.
There is a further point. AP's engineering colleges, are to put it mildly, horrible. Most of them are so bad it would shock you. The Telugus themseleves admit it The proof the pudding is always in the eating: the Telugus, despite having 80,000+ seats to choose from, make a beeline for other states colleges: KA, TN and MH. So much for this point.
On to the LMG's (ingusitic minority colleges.) The facts are as follows:
Every lingusitic minority college in the city of Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra has 50 % of its seats reserved for its community. Strangely, the people who advise Maharashtrians not to ask for reservations but compete etc are DEAFENINGLY silent on this matter. A sample is provided:
Khalsa college (Punjabi quota)
KJ Somaiya: (Gujarati quota)
SIES College :(South Indian/Tamil quota)
Thakur COllege (50 % North Indian quota)
Thadomal Shahani (Punjabi quota)
Rizvi quota (Muslim quota)
Bhavan's college (Gujarati quota)
and so on. Hence, the Gujaratis, Punjabis, et al have reserved seats for themselves in their own states AS WELL AS seats for themselves in OUR STATE.
We are the only state in India to have colleges which have reservations of this order and that too for people not native to the state. That this is accepted and that the same people lecture locals about reservation not being good, is another example of hypocrisy.
Now to provide some more examples:
Gujarat National Law University (GNLU): 10 % quota for Gujarat state candidates.)
National Law University Bhopal: (NLIU Bhopal): 50 % quota for state candidates+quota for girls (only those from MP)+SC+ST(only those from MP) and so on. You can imagine, out of some 80-100 seats, only 20-25 are left for the so-called outsiders.
Chattisgarh National Law University (50 % quota for state candidates)
On the other hand, there is NO, I repeat NO quota for local candiates in ANY of Maharashtra's law colleges. So much for this point.
In Haryana, the government has decided to create an education city in Sonepat, near Gurgaon. In it, it has decided to set aside 25 % of its seats for candiates from Haryana state. This has been assured by none other than the Chief Minister. It is to be called Rajiv gandhi education city. 25 % of the seats to be set aside from the beginning for locals. He has reiterated it several times.
Even in Chanakya National Law University, there is a quota for Bihari candiates. (I read this in a Sify report. If you do a google search for it, may you find the report)
Needless to say, St. Stephens and St.Xavier's both have 50 % reservations for Christians. Haven't heard anyone tell me that this made these institutions any less sought after. The lines outside them are still as long as before.
If reservations is such a bad thing, than why don't Christians in St. Xavier's/St.Stephen's get rid of their Christian quota?

Saurabh Swamy:
Please think: If you have no problem with all these states giving quotas for their local people in their states, then why are still singing your meritocracy song?
Quotas are in Mumbai based colleges only, and not over all of Maharshtra...he he. Merit swamy, merit: how does your theory of merit alone prevailing square with 50 % Linguistic minority quota? Where is the merit/hard work/drive/energy and so on and so forth? Where is the cosmo song?
Appreciated: Reservations for local, not because he is marathi speaking but since he should not be forced to go long for education.... Swamy, why should reservations not be for Marathi speaking people? There can be reservations for Tamilains in TN, Keralites in KL, Goans in Goa, Punjabis in Punjab, Telugus in AP, Kannadigas in Karnataka, Bengalis in WB, Oriyas in Orissa, Gujaratis in Gujarart...and all these quotas can be there for these communtieis in our state AS WELL!! If quotas should not be for linguistic/religions-then why are you so silent on the linguistic minority quotas prevalent in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivili, Pen and so on? Where is your sentiment that quotas should not be there for lingustic/religious reasons?
After all this, you STILL OPPOSE reservations for Maharashtrians in Maharashtra? Dude, are you nuts?
Dont blame public for the decision taken by governments and politicians based their own interest and not in public interest...
Swamy, I am rolling in laughter!! What did you just say: not in public interest...which world are you living in? What do you mean...not in public interest? If it wasn't in the public interest, you think these guys would have done it? Who are you kidding? Who are you trying to fool...you think the local people didn't want it? You think the local people didn't want reservations? Didn't want seats ONLY FOR THEMSELVES? Didn;t want admission to be dabarred to non-locals? YOu honestly think that those poeple in other states WANT Non-locals or that they were upset and the politicians imposed it upon them? Dude, what public interest and their own interest?! The local people of these states WANT RESERVATION and THAT'S WHY the politicians GAVE IT TO THEM, the local people want reservation/quotas and that;s why politicos gave it to them. Understand that fact. THese guys are very happy to be 100 % local colleges/schools. You think the government took the decision without thinking of the local people? You think the local people are unhappy about this?
You think the Bengalis were anything but happy when they debarred non-BOngs from taking admission?
yeah right...who is the public in Haryana? Haryanvis...so who benefits from 25 % reservation...who else but Haryanvis?
Who is the public in Punjab? Punjus..so who benefits from 85 % reservation-who else but Punjabis?
Who is the public in TN? So who benefits but Tamilians?
So, to cut a long story short, these decisions are taken to benefit the local people BECAUSE QUOTAS BENEFIT THE LOCAL PEOPLE i.e. PUBLIC INTEREST, therefore when politicians reserve seats, they do it very much in public interest i.e. the local public..local people's interest.
Public interest in all states means that which is in the interest of the local people of that state. Reservations benefit LOCAL PEOPLE, hence these decisions are actually TOTALLY IN PUBLIC INTEREST, because reservations=local people=public interest.
Therefore, reservations for locals are in THE PUBLIC INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE of that state!!
Swamy, think a little. If it wasn't in the local people's interest, they would have opposed it right?! Complained right?! Made protest, candle light Marches, written letters of complaints-right? After all, if it isn;t in your interest, you'll complain right?
Swamy, think a little. If it wasn't in the local people's interest, they would have opposed it right?!
.....Have they? Swamy, have they?

I await your answer, Swamy, I await your answer!
vikas, u make sense. but the drama is too much yaar.. "have they, have they.." we generally try to discuss and convince, but this feels a bit like a speech... :D
