Armed with a pair of scissors and a plastic comb, a man is in deep concentration. Snip, snip, snip. In the background, cars speed by. Passers-by shuffle past with the occasional curious glance. Snip, snip, snip. Lallan Poojari, the roadside barber, is at work.

Roadside barbers are most commonly known as Naayis. It is a little known fact, but they are jokingly called ‘Italian barbers’ by their customers. “We work on the pavement, which is made of itth (brick) and hence the name,” laughs Muktar Ahmed, a barber from Kemps Corner.
