After a long wait, the Brihanamumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking’s Chinese KingLong buses will finally roll on the Mumbai roads.

However, the bus will not have its traditional red colour, it will be blue and violet. BEST will launch the service as a New Year’s gift to commuters in January after the state government clears the new colours.

While inaugurating the bus, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said, “Since Mumbai’s population is increasing day-by-day, those who travel by cars can now opt for this mode of transportation.”

BEST committee member Sunil Ganacharya said, “It’s an express bus service and we have planned to present it as a New Year gift to Mumbaikars. BEST has always thought about the commuters benefit and safety,” he said. According to BEST officials, railway first class train travellers can also opt for these buses if they are carrying some luggage.

“If the passengers travel by first class railway, the fare comes to around Rs 170 and if they opt for these buses, they can reach their destination for around Rs 50,” Ganacharya added.

If this service is a success, the undertaking plans to extend the bus services from Bhayender, Dahisar and Oshiwara to South Mumbai.

These buses will run from a different BRTS lane on highways.
