The first day of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link passed off smoothly, except for the fact that the sea link was tested to its full strength by residents of the city, who were looking forward to cruise along this newly opened one of its kind sea link.
People from not just Bandra and Worli, but other parts of the city decided to use the bridge, causing traffic snarls for hours at a stretch.
“I don’t think I will use the sea link frequently, but I wanted to drive on it,” exclaimed Manish Malhotra, a resident of Matunga. Said Sheetal Gala, a resident of Bandra, “I did not expect that it would take us so long to cross the sea link. However, I think once the toll starts things will change and it will indeed take us less than 8 minutes to cross the sea link.”
Since it was the first day and there was no toll, as announced by the Chief Minister, many people decided to ply on this route. A traffic police constable posted near the bridge stated that the curiosity among people led to commuters flocking at the sea link, thereby causing incessant jams. “Also, the fact that there would be no toll for the first few days led more and more to try the sea link. Once the toll starts I don’t think there would be any problems,” said the constable.

Possible reasons why there was so much traffic on day one.
1. Bottlenecks at enterance and exit, it is probabaly not planned very well. e.g. Routine let turn from mahim to eastern express was changed to right and there was a big traffic their despite of directions.
2. Lots of vehicles marched into sea link for 1st day experience. They actually didn't go to office but came here. I also heard there was huge traffic from batamati which came to sea link.
3. Toll station could be another issue, it might not have been designed for full flow of traffic on all 4 lanes.
4. There are 9 lac vehicles in mumbai, 350 getting added every day. Average stupid and common mumbaikar might have thought, all traffic problems in mumbai are solved. So let me take my car out today which i have bought 5 years ago. And suddenly we see actual numbers of vehicles on the road.
So to conclude, we can hope bandra worli sea link ease some traffic. And also hope that goverment and project managers also planned it considering the rate of new vehicles coming on mumbai roads.
