Cracking down for the first time on those illegally selling BMC water, civic officials teamed up with the Shivaji Nagar police to nab 21 people who have run a small-scale racket for the past 10 years. They also seized 96 booster pumps that were used to steal the water.
On Monday morning, engineers from the Water Department, along with 50 policemen, conducted surprise checks in the Shivaji Nagar, Rafique Nagar, Kamala Raman Nagar and Raman Mama Nagar slums - all located along a stretch that faced severe water shortage.
