There will soon be more Santro and Indica taxis on Mumbai roads. Taxi drivers are being told by their unions to slowly phase out the current Premier Padmini cabs.
"The taxis have become old now and we are planning to replace them with second-hand Santros and Indicas. In my general meeting next week, I will be telling the taxi drivers to buy such cars. The union will take care of the loan," said A L Quadros, general secretary, Mumbai Taximen's Union.

If the unions themselves are asking their drivers to do it then we can expect changes. I think Santros and indicas will make good taxis. But where are they planning to put the CNG cylinders ?

There could be another reason too... that the taxiwallahs are facing strong competition from private operators like Meru, Gold etc who are equipped with better cars and have much better professional service.
A L Quadros, who is as complacent as a government babu, seems to have finally woken up to this fact :-)
