The cities beyond Mumbai in what is called 'rest of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region' which encompasses the area north of Mumbai up to Virar, Karjat and Alibag, are in conditions poorer than the stretched Mumbai city. It needs a major upgrade in terms of both quality of facilities and economic growth so that the cities change from their present dormitory status to vibrant cities on their own right, with its dependence on Mumbai vastly reduced.

Yes, it's an excellent idea. If rest of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regions are developed it will distribute the migrants which will certainly help to dilute the problem of overpopulation in Mumbai.

No doubt its excellent idea, but not for migrants or distribute migrants. It must be for mumbai and first migrantion must be restricted. Allow migrants but keep some criteria.

This 'excellent' idea has been around for many decades. One implementation of this idea was the township of Navi Mumbai.
Experience and simple common sense has told us that No development will succeed or provide benefit without the proper planning, creation and effective distribution of artificial infrastructure and also availability of natural resources (which everybody very conveniently takes for granted).
Imagine that tomorrow the 'metropolitan' region is sanctioned to be 'developed'. Today all that word means is that builders/developers will make simply a killing buying non-developmental/agricultural/forest land at rock bottom prices and set about creating residential and commercial zones.
But how many new water supply projects or new electricity generations projects have been proposed to take supply these developed regions ?? And who is going to pay for creating them.. as usual will it be only the taxes of the common man or will the state get percentage sharing from the builders/developers?
As of today just one failed monsoon is enough to announce a 30% water cut across the city and back to 4-8 hours load-shedding for the metropolitan region - forget the 8-10 hrs load-shedding of interiors in the rest of the state.. will the new developed zones share the old natural resources with mumbai? if so then they will get the theoretical first share as they will be closer to the lakes and power projects.. in which case they will get costlier in Mumbai. Are Mumbaikars ready for that ?
There are a lot of questions which need answering.

True. There are indeed lot of questions we need to ask. Problem is that our elected representatives who are responsible to do this asking are the ones who are more often than not on the sides of the builder lobby. Recent case in point the Hiranandani project in Powai area.

Yeah really good idea... lets develop Thane, Alibaug for these bahiyyas and let them enjoy our tax payers money.. so that they can create more slums...Kill some more people..Loot some more people, rape some more women..
Let bihar be vacant for lalu and his chamchas...
Let Amarshingh and Mayawati create more parks with her idols..
We will take care of those bahiyyas... develop 'rest of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region' so that these morons can reap benefits ...
