A single day of giving up travel by car could bring down the city’s soaring air pollution levels almost instantly. The air quality tests conducted at Carter Road, Bandra, last month, when the area celebrated a ‘Car-Free Day’ to promote non-motorised transport, indicate that cars are a significant contributor to air pollution in Mumbai.
In a first-ever test to check the contribution of vehicular pollution to the area’s air quality, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) with the help of Awaaz Foundation took continuous ambient air readings at the same location on two days — the first day was an average weekday, February 17, and the second was on February 21, the Car Free Day.
