The smart card, introduced successfully in several cities across the world to make life easier for train and bus commuters, has proved to be a non-starter in Mumbai within just a few months of arrival.
Harsha Gandhi, a Std XII student from Dombivli, bought the much-touted 'Go Mumbai' card.On Monday, Gandhi was told he could not use the card on Western Railway, and when he showed the officials the pamphlet issued with the card that clearly says 'Commuters may choose to travel across Mumbai on the Central, Western, Harbour railway and BEST routes,' he was told the card wasn't valid on the Western line yet and forced to cough up a fine of Rs 260 for ticketless travel though the officials admitted that he was not genuine defaulter.
Raunak Naik, who has also purchased the Go Mumbai card, pointed out that there were other problems with the card as well. "I have seen my balance being deducted from the card arbitrarily. Sometimes, the journey between Thane and Ghatkopar is charged six rupees and sometimes rupees ten. We have no place to get such faults corrected."
