The pot of gold which Indian Railways was sitting on for decades can at last be opened.

The state government on Wednesday paved the way for development of a 11-acre plot adjoining the Bandra (east) suburban station by granting a floor space index (FSI) of 4, which means that the built-up portion can go up to 44 acres of space.

The ultimate beneficiary will be Mumbaikars, as the Rs4,000-crore that the development of the plot is expected to reap — even in these days of a stagnant real estate market — will be entirely ploughed back into railway projects to be undertaken in the city and the state.
