Twenty-five days into J&K posting, Gaonkar dies in action in Rajouri
"What is the use of all these people here when I have lost the one person who means the most?” asks an inconsolable 29-year-old Akansha Ajit Gaonkar.
Her family had received a call from the Army at 10.30 am on Tuesday, informing them that her husband, 32-year-old Army Naik Ajit Shivaji Gaonkar, had died.
Amidst the gloom pops up a tiny face with hope written on it. Six-year-old Omkar doesn’t want to cry in front of his mother. The pain is there but he puts up a brave face.
“I know what’s happened to dad, but I am worried about my mom. She has not eaten since she heard the news,” he says, sitting next to his younger brother who is asleep. Ask him what he will do now, and comes a sheepish reply, “I will do my best to take care of my family.”

Today, I saw a photograph in Hindustan Times of little Omkar saluting his slain father with his grandfather holding him. It really moved me to tears! How innocent the child looks! My heart goes out to the family. The brave soldier has laid down his life safeguarding our border, the least I thought is to at least donate some money to the family, thought it cannot replace the loss which they have suffered. Could anyone let me know the family's contact details? Could Marathikatta please start a forum with a dedicated account to solicit donations for the family? I will be the first to contribute.

I read somewhere that a Nashik school has offered free education to Omkar Gaonkar. Not sure if it is the Bhonsale Military School...
BTW There was a post on Katta by Parag with a photo of Omkar. I cant seem to find that post now... but what struck me about the picture was how it could just as easily pass for the photo of a boy holding his farmer fathers picture..

Shivaji Gaonkar, whose soldier son Ajit Gaonkar was killed while trying to thwart an audacious attack by Pakistan Army regulars at the border in Kupwara said "People are killed daily in incidents like bomb blasts or accidents but I am happy that my son was of some use to the country.”.
But is the maharashtra state paying any heed to sacrifices of the martyrs? Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was ignored similarly when he passed away.Army Naik Ajit Shivaji Gaonkar is treated with the same fate.
A budding singer was given a state funeral in his hometown, nothing wrong if it goes with the peoples sentiments, But what about our very own Ajit Gaonkar.

especially appreciate how punchtantra mentioned about the 'pakistani army regulars'. "Terrorism is just a bastard child of War" said a famous israeli general and our field marshal Manekshaw surely would have agreed with him
in the singers case peoples sentiment was no doubt involved but it was also clearly a media hyped event as well with Star TV and times of india involved. i dont remember even the likes of Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar or Mukesh getting state funerals.
i just wish at least our local media had given as much prominence to Ajit Gaonkar. but as manishbhau says it is probably a good thing that there wont be any politicians at the shaheeds funeral

There is no political mileage in visiting army funeral (its too regular activity).
Sometimes i think all these blasts are of more beneficial to politicians then terrorists.

In a way it might be good that no politicians visit the funeral.. to me they seem like vultures hovering over the dead.. each wanting its share

The politics has already started. sushma swaraj is claiming it as congress attempt to divert attention from the "cash-for-votes" scandal.
