This year, dahi handi events in Thane will be a tad different from previous years. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be monitoring the events at major dahi handi venues in the area.

CCTVs are being installed for the first time in Thane in view of the recent terror attacks in Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Besides, the increasing number of govindas has prompted the police to take extra precautions as Thane and Mumbai go into the festive mode.

There are around 1,800 dahi handis in Thane, of which 391 are Sarvajanik Utsav Mandals (organisers that allow other groups to break handis put up by them). Of these, seven are prominent handis and see a crowd ranging from 80,000 to 1.5 lakh.Stating that the police had conducted a meeting with the representatives of such mandals listing the dos and don’ts, additional commissioner of police (crime), Thane, Prashant Burde said, “Bomb detection squads will also be on vigil at the prime festival venues.’’
