The scenario easily represents a dichotomy in Mumbai. There’s a Marathi theatre festival, Nataknaama (with seven plays being staged over three days), starting from today at Prithvi theatre. And until last afternoon, the ticket sales were zero.

This, given that Marathi theatre is, and always has been, so alive and kicking in the city, comes as a shock.

After much passing of messages, friends began pitching in and tickets began to be sold, yet at a snail’s pace.

The reason, according to theatergoers, is the location. Marathi theatre audiences don’t go to Prithvi theatre, seems to be the consensus.

Apparently, there’s a strong cultural association with traditionally Marathi theatre staging halls, and it’s strong enough to deter people from going elsewhere.
