Kalaraag is event promoting performing arts.
Well, It is actually a college festival
It is a cultural festival run by a engineering college.
It is a cultural festival run by a Engineering college students.
This is how i would put it from all I could gather from discussions with students of D.Y. Patil college in last couple of weeks.

It has started 10 years ago as a small college festival, we might not be aware of kalaraag for all these years now. All we knew in this segment is mood indigo's and malhar. With no surprise, marketing always scores over engineering.

One big difference of kalaraag from other college fests is these guys are inviting upcoming and young stage artists, folk dancers, photographers, film makers and they need not be studying in engineering college (correct me if iam wrong).

Events like kalaraag are break through opportunities for those who want to give their talents a full chance but don't have any opportunities coming their way. But these groups of engineers are doing it over years and years with all possible problems on their way. One of such thing is to make a folk dancer from eastern Maharashtra travel to Mumbai and stay here for couple of days. Its like bmc school teacher want to go on erope trip(if iam not exaggerating). But then it was very remarkable to learn that these students are also arranging the travel and stay for artists from rural part of Maharashtra as sometimes they can’t afford it.

With such efforts and dedication, college festivals do have potential to become some kind of brand if they want to work on it. Brand for platform to discover the new talents, this platform should attract courageous personalities from the art and theater industry. Such events can become major influence on the industry and also help them find the hidden talents from rural parts of india. But problem with this idea is such events are organized and run by students who do their job with full dedication but cannot commit to the cause for longer period as they have larger and more important commitments once they step out. How to solve this problem? I will leave this here for discussion.

Another important thing about such events is opportunity it provides to cultural and traditional arts to surface from grave to straight on stage with pretty descent crowd. Last time i have scene a "balya dance" in konkan i was the only audience and thats mainly because i cannot dance with them (don't bother what balya dance is). What one could figure out is the rawness of the art, absolutely no cover ups. Warli paintings is another example, i can probably write a seperate article on the subject.

Coming back to the point such art forms have no hope of smallest opportunity and they exist lonely somewhere in the remote village only to be perished with time. Maybe it would be too much for a college festival to do something about it, but it atleast makes us realize what we are loosing.

Events like kalaraag with mission of “Exploring performing arts” are definitely supporting the cause of cultivating and protecting the cultural and traditional forms of art in the state. We are very happy about such events and we wish them all the best.

Kalaraag this year are inviting people all over from maharashtra and conducting competitions in one act plays, folk dances, short films and photography. The event is organized in D. Y. Patil auditorium Nerul. The events are starting from 19th of september up to 21st of septermber. Please check their website http://www.kalaraag.org/
for exact details.
