Association calls for increased attention by Bombayites
Marathi theatre is facing a spate of problems. It is not like things were always moving smoothly for them, but since recently, things seem to be getting even worse. From rental problems to no assigned place for cultural activities, vernacular theatre is facing the brunt.
The Marathi Natya Nirmata Sangharsh Samiti had called upon a meeting to get all the producers of theatre shows under one roof, setting aside all differences to help theatre deal with their varied set of problems.
Dilip Jadhav, a member of the working committee of the Samiti, said, "Marathi theatre is facing injustice. The Prabhodhankar Thakeray Hall, in Borivali, and the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall in Vile Parle, are the only two theatres available to us. We have been facing problem since the rent has been hiked and the tickets are sold at a very cheap rate." He complained that the theatre was rented out at a lease depending on the day and the time that it is required.
He went on to add that although the lease was not stable, the cost of tickets hardly changed as per the day and timing of the shows. "We sell our tickets at a nominal price of Rs. 60. In this day of rising costs, it is hard for the theatre people like us to make ends meet," he says. Moreover, the BMC hiked the rates of rent thus, squeezing the pockets of the producers and directors. "After an agitation against the increase in rent, the BMC lowered the rents but increased the cost of electricity," he said.

Its very sad, but it was bound to happen. Rents of all the places especially these places where theaters are situated are very high.
And if they increase the cost of the tickets ? .. iam not very sure if it will really affect the crowd coming to the theaters.
On the other hand Marathi Natya snagarsh samiti should also struggle hard for quality plays in comming times.
Now days most of the theaters they play "Marathi Bana" a 3rd rate Orchestra by Ashok Hande. Its waste of money but at the same time its a crowd puller. I really don't know whats the problem

I think with high cost of rentals and real estate the theatre industry is not able to cover their margins just on the basis of their shows. Theatres have to evolve with the changing culture of the city. I think they should be there in malls just as the multiplex's are. A typical marathi family (or mumbaikar family) who wants to visit the theatre on the weekend or sunday would then be able to shop and eat out as well as the same location for convenience sake.

Satellite channels and the film industry has taken away the talent pool from the theatres. The actors who once used to have pride in doing theatre are taking up the daily nonsense soaps on satellite channels. Its sheer waste of the talent. What we are left are tragic comedy plays.
You need a Vikram Gokhle, Shriram Lagoo to understand the power of theatre and pull in the crowds. i admire Ashok Hande for the very simple reason that he has managed to pull the average middle class people to pay expensive tickets for Marathi Bana. You need people to come back to the theatres.
