Association calls for increased attention by Bombayites

Marathi theatre is facing a spate of problems. It is not like things were always moving smoothly for them, but since recently, things seem to be getting even worse. From rental problems to no assigned place for cultural activities, vernacular theatre is facing the brunt.
The Marathi Natya Nirmata Sangharsh Samiti had called upon a meeting to get all the producers of theatre shows under one roof, setting aside all differences to help theatre deal with their varied set of problems.

Dilip Jadhav, a member of the working committee of the Samiti, said, "Marathi theatre is facing injustice. The Prabhodhankar Thakeray Hall, in Borivali, and the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall in Vile Parle, are the only two theatres available to us. We have been facing problem since the rent has been hiked and the tickets are sold at a very cheap rate." He complained that the theatre was rented out at a lease depending on the day and the time that it is required.

He went on to add that although the lease was not stable, the cost of tickets hardly changed as per the day and timing of the shows. "We sell our tickets at a nominal price of Rs. 60. In this day of rising costs, it is hard for the theatre people like us to make ends meet," he says. Moreover, the BMC hiked the rates of rent thus, squeezing the pockets of the producers and directors. "After an agitation against the increase in rent, the BMC lowered the rents but increased the cost of electricity," he said.
