After days of dithering, Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested MNS chief Raj Thackeray and SP leader Abu Azmi on charges of promoting enmity between groups ( see video ).
Both, Raj Thackeray and Abu Azami were later granted bails.
Raj Thackeray has been granted conditional bail ( see video ) on a bond of Rs 15,000. Granting bail, the court asked Thackeray not to speak to media and move out in a group of more than five persons.
Thackeray’s arrest has sparked violence in Maharashtra ( see video ), and one person was killed during a stone-pelting incident in Nashik. While Mumbai Police have confirmed that the situation is under control, violence has been reported at Nashik and Dahisar in Maharashtra.
Thackeray, who was arrested from his central Mumbai residence, was taken in a police van to Vikhroli court in the suburbs.
Commenting on the arrest of the MNS chief, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said that Raj Thackeray's arrest shows that government will not let anyone take law into his own hands.
According to a Mumbai police official, the law and order situation is under control in the city.
