Sheer lack of political will by the state government is keeping people from an ambitious rail project that aims to link Manmad in Maharashtra to Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Apart from saving the Railways Rs2 crore a day, the project aims to reduce distances between Delhi and Kanyakumari by 680km and between Delhi and Mumbai by 140km.
However, the project has not kicked off despite the railway ministry’s own survey indicating a 7 per cent rate of return (RoR) in the proposed rail link. For, as many as six MPs and 36 MLAs from the area have no time to raise the issue either in the parliament or in the state legislative council.
In fact, when office-bearers of a local socio-political organisation, Loksangram, recently brought up the matter before union railway minister Lalu Prasad, he was visibly shocked. “If the survey report was positive, then why was the same not shown to me earlier?” he asked, promising to include the project in the next railway budget.
