MNS president Raj Thackeray rejected state security after news reached him that it had been downgraded from ‘Z’ to ‘Y’ category.

"I can protect myself. I don't need government security,'' said Thackeray after being informed about the government's decision to scale down his security cover.

Raj has so far had Z security with four carbine-wielding policemen and a personal officer moving around with him. Under Y category, he is entitled to a few policemen (besides his party workers) for protection.

The decision was taken after a threat perception committee headed by chief secretary Johny Joseph recommended to the state that Thackeray's security be scaled down from Z to Y category. The decision was then communicated to the police commissioner.

JCP (law and order) K L Prasad confirmed that Thackeray's security had been reduced. Police chief Hasan Gafoor said the decision was taken sometime ago and implemented on Wednesday.
