MNS chief Raj Thackeray has demanded that the Maharashtra Energy Regulatory Commission (MERC) should withdraw the power tariff concessions announced for malls, multiplexes and construction sites. He has threatened to stop work at these sites if the MNS demand was not accepted by MERC in the next two days.

Malls, multiplexes and construction sites in the Mulund-Bhandup-Kanjur Marg belt, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Dombivli-Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Vasai have benefited from the commission's tariff order on Monday. Mahavitaran had proposed to raise the tariff for these three categories to Rs 9.81 per unit from the existing Rs 7.39. But the commission decided to reduce it to Rs 7.15 per unit.

"On Wednesday, I will visit the MERC office and submit a memorandum to demand withdrawal of the concessions,'' Thackeray told mediapersons on Tuesday. "How can the MERC think of giving concessions to malls and multiplexes when the middle class is burdened with the power tariff hike?'' he asked.
