Some people say it is a good idea, some are horrified when they hear about it.
There are different ways to look at it.
1) Considering the problem of AIDS and teenage pregnancies, it is better that students learn about sex and get sex education. Already there is a lot of sex on TV and in cinemas. Movies and dances are often vulgar. TV advertisements hint at sex. Children and teenagers are curious about sex, and they don't talk to their parents about it. Instead of them approaching their seniors and getting into trouble because of their curiosity, it is better that they learn it from school in classes. Also, people are having sex much earlier nowadays, and no one can prevent that. So better to give them proper education about sex.
2) The opposite view is that in theory everyone should know about sex and have good knowledge of it, but teaching it in schools will tempt a lot of children into exploring sex. In this view, sex education in schools is giving acceptability to underage sex. Also, schools are not for sex education. Why corrupt students and tempt them?

Yes, teaching sex in schools will definately tempt students to explore it. Not suprising at all that other subjects fail to raise this curiosity.
But then why do we think today's bollywood numbers and fashion trends won't do the same trick.
Sex education will at least address the problem of AIDS, teenage pregnancy and it will make the subject to be discussed more commonly.
Please get the curriculam approved from Mr. Navalkar first, he might put moral and cultural perspective into this subject (This line is not at all sarcastic).

Whether we like it or not, accept it or not, sex talk is all around on TV,Movies,Radio everywhere. There is no escaping from it for the adolescents. Rather than learning about sex from teachers which would be more or less formal. Personaly I think parents and other elders should make a right effort in this direction by first taking these adolescents into confidence and then gradually make them aware about the hazards of getting involved in casual sex or sex out of curiousity !

Parents cant do anything yaar.. they are too embarassed to talk about sex. Even relatives. Children are too far ahead these days, how is any parent going to actually describe sex to his son or daughter who is 8-10 yrs old? Not possible.
Sex education is very important in life and sex is even more important than the education.
The more your educated about sex the more you will take care and try different things (right and wrong)

Sex education is a must in schools. But this must not be taken as a subject to discuss every week in school. There must be some sessions held every semester to educate on sex education. For this consultants who provide information on sex education can be called and must be given to students after their 7th grade.
I think sex education should be given in theory as well as practical. :)

anyway i agree with gouri. teachers are like us or our parents only - they are also too embarrassed or shocked to discuss sex with kids. better to have consultants to do it.

"A little less conversation, a little more action" - Elvis might as well have been describing us Indians... And no Pawwala, I am not talking about that kind of action ;-) When most Indians hear the words Sex Education the first (and maybe only) thing that comes in mind is sex positions and sexual activity... We are already past masters in both those aren't we - Kamasutra was written in ancient India and modern India is well set to be the most populous country. As Kiran has pointed out Sex education in modern India should and must majorly address the problem of AIDS, teenage pregnancy, STDs, PMS, Birth control etc. A lot could have been done if the education department would have quietly introduced the various above mentioned topics as parts within the Biology and physical education curriculum.
Now in India everything is changing. First we dint have any media to get information but now we have internet, videos, news, health channels (who speak about sex and other health issues), music channels spread the news during aids day(have concerts). So according to me there is no need of sex education and 13 or 14 year old can just google it out what he/she needs to know it is as simple. The only people who will really need sex education are the un-educated people and people living in the rural area. In all your major cities there is no need.
Anyways even In the US of A they teach sex education but still the abortion rates in US are quite high. So I guess its another DEAD-LOCK :)
(This is the most sensible thing I have said on this site and all of u guys will agree)

There is an important point there. What has changed now - compred to when I was in school - is TV and internet. TV of course still only shows a lot of groping and smooching, no real idea about what actually is happening.
But internet - yes... at least in the cities, its easy for a small kid in 4th or 5th class to access internet and find out everything...

I disagree to most, we do not require a separate book or subject on sex education. As everyone has pointed out the subject much publicised by media, viz. Movies, News, Print media, etc.
Many of us must have noticed that the newer generation is picking up fast, specially those things which are generally termed as bad as yet, like bad words meaning "gaalis". Most of the time they get to know meaning of these by provocating seniors or other medium like newspapers / magazines. I agree that this is definately not the healthy way to teach the kids, moreover its not talked about by parents to children since it is considered indecent to do so, as per culture.
We do have subjects like biology, where in these topics might be introduced gradually as gender differenciation without emphasizing on Sex seperately.
On one end, some people like me believe that "control" is the way of life in which case, people should be prohibited to engage in such matters; though definately not compromising on health. In this case information can be dissipated discretely in non-exciting controlled manner.
Another younger school of thought is to let everyone free to understand and act without any control from society. This ensures full availability of information but moral use of knowledge which is of concern.
May be a middle path, with full awareness to issues like AIDS and other fatal diseases, students should be communicated in manner such that sex and its offesenses does not become a next door story like in developed countries like "US".

Sex education in what way - i mean in what degrees, will it teach basic facts about sex, or it goes further to dwell with masturbation, dating, marriage, kamasutra, and etc.
With sex being discussed among known friends, Now probably it will be a open forum in the class involving faculty, girl students and boy students and can lead to anything possible, even with some schools or classrooms becoming kind of Rajneesh Ashrams!
Sex education doesnt necessarily lead to any advantages! If you look at some advanced nations then there would be mixed reactions about sex education, with sex abusives being equally high there.
Probably people in advanced countries are benefitted by better living conditions with cleanliness which could be the reason for less no. of HIV cases, then where as people in developing and poor countries who live in improper sanitary conditions have more chance of getting diseases.
I think it would be a good idea if Sex education is restricted to basic facts and included as couple of chapters in Biology subject - and not explored as a seperate subject leading to Kamasutras.

When we say starting sex education at school levels what I understand by it is developing a positive and healthier attitude towards smthing like SEX which is imp in our lives. So that they can differentiate what is good and bad for them and others as well.
Through Sex education we would be able to guide them against problems like Child molestation, AIDS, teenage pregnancy which is again for their better future and health.
If teachers and parents are feeling embarrassed talking abt it then Schools should think about Child Psychologists to come and probably take sessions for them as he would knw what info, in what manner should be passed to a child and of course at what age which is also important.

What I feel here is our government or any other private institute or any other source should not fall in this issue..This will affect in both positive as well as negative ways. I think this and coming generation is too fast and sensible to learn on their own. Also they dont like us teaching them about these things. Many times it will happen that kids will know more about sex than their parents........its reality. Giving birth to the children doesnt mean having correct knoledge about sex. I think we should leave this on the generation itself and dont worry about the effects taking place whether positively or negatively.........

We have to understand the key issues which are AIDS, STDs, Birth Control, teenage pregnancies, handling the changes in the body during adolescence etc.
Do we have the right people and number to teach this subject, it seems the subject is more of a problem for the teachers than the students?
I remember we used to have "Communtiy Living" as a subject in school.
This education has to be an extension to the "Community Living", based on the changes which have happened because of the information explosion.
One more point is ..we shouldnt make a kamasutra book out of a community living text Book. To learn Kamasutra.. the kids can just wait for a while

yes i feel that the young generation should be made aware of sex. Their is curiosity in them to learn about sex & in this process they gather wrong information for the same. This results in serious problem they have to face. And also at home the parents should try to help them out.
