The Maharashtra Government will shortly notify around 3,000 hectare mangroves area and suburbs as ‘protected forest’.
The Forest Department will issue a notification next week, declaring the area as protected forest, a senior forest official said.
Following the notification, the area will come under the purview of the Indian Forest Act and in possession of the Forest Department. The department had in June last year, notified 2,157 hectares of mangroves area as protected forest.
The latest notification will boost the efforts to protect the eco-sensitive mangroves which are disappearing due to rampant construction activity, the official added.

This is definately a good news. But iam wondering how come shiv sena is not coming up with any issues on this. If you all remember, there was a major protest against lifting ulcra last year http://www.marathikatta.com/Mumbai/ULCRA_and_Mumbaikar/
most of these efforts makes no sense if bmc and builders lobby don't have this land.
Good call anyways, lets hope it stays for a while.
