In a shocking revelation, the Upper House was informed that there were over 60,000 full-blown cases of AIDS in the state while 2.85 lakh people were detected with HIV. As many as 184 cases of children, who were diagnosed to be HIV positive, were registered at the AIDS treatment centre at Yavatmal on November 14.
Health minister Vimal Mundhda said the AIDs situation was alarming in the absence of efforts to check the spread of the dreaded disease by the government.
Mundhda admitted that 184 cases of children infected with HIV were registered at the Yavatmal referral centre and that the patients were from districts of Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Akola, Amravati, Washim and Adilabad in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Of them, 169 children tested positive.

Acha samjhaoooo to jara pavwala :-D
As far as I understand Health ministry plays a very imp role in these cases:
1)Setting up counseling, diagnostic centers and hospitals with aids treatment facilities in all remote areas.
2)Assuring blood supply which happens through blood banks in these areas is well tested.
3)Needles that used during vaccinations campaigns or even otherwise in clinics and hospitals are safe.
4)Proper awareness campaigns are executed taking NGO help in such remote areas.
5)And above all keeping a check regularly that all above points are been followed.
If this is were they r failing then yes they r to be blamed. I m sure they are failing here. So u r also right and we are also right. Cheers :-D!!

No Pavwaala, i am not a retard but you mate do seem to suffer from at least one form of AIDS - Acquired Intelligence Deficiency Syndrome ;-)
Check my post again please - I have accepted your contention that awareness needs to be spread. Same thing is being said by Funaholic.
What i am asking is what is the best way to spread awareness. No you can't have Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty visiting each town in India :-) But Cricket and Shahrukh Khan can and they do !
Sadly the big question is whether people are willing to listen and see the ads... or do they just change the channel when the anti-aids ads are displayed.
BTW FYI i do keep hearing (and seeing and reading) about AIDS awareness ads and posters on AIR, Doordarshan and other 'sarkari' (goverment) institutions.
When was the last time you heard 'Vividh Bharati' (i hope you know what that is) and the last time you saw DD channel. Have you ever visited goverment hospitals mate ?
I have. For one thing it is part of my job too (I am an MR working with a Pharma company which produces TB medicine).
If you care to tune in to them (DD and AIR) you will see daily ads about AIDS awareness. They are dreary unlike the glitzy ads you see on private channels but they are there for those who care to see them and understand what they convey.
Let me give you an example (if you have not tuned off already).
Like others you might remember the famous balbir pasha ad.
But like me do you remember the 1995 (yes 1995 not 2005) Shabana Azmi ad which came years before the balbir pasha ad. The one where she was shown to visit a hospital and craddle an AIDS affected child conveying the message that HIV cannot spread by touch.
Yes friend that was by the health ministry on good old DD when cable TV (forget FM) was not that widespread and AIDS was fashionable topic only in the west.
Anyway Cheers to you. Tell the DJ to play some songs of Queen next time you are in the pub/bar. Yea dear old Freddie boy died of AIDS too and maybe that's all you can remember of AIDS awareness
PS: Incidentally TB kills more people in India than AIDS does... much much much more. But then it isn't as Popular or Fashionable in the West. So it wont be discussed on private FM channels in India. Sad but then so is reality.
[No offense to you mate, nothing personal ;-)]

Yes Pavwaala, it is pretty clear to me (and I hope the rest of us) who is the ‘Retard’ here.
You have shown your usual ‘maturity’ and ‘intelligence’ in blaming the government, the health ministry, the politicians and everyone else.
I strongly suspect that if you had not grown tired about typing then you would have gone on to add a thesis on how the HIV virus originated with the Bhaiyaas of UP-Bihar.
Yes Sir. You must be proud. “Done my duty, served my country”
And then to top it off you call meemumbaikar and funaholic ‘retard’ !
Careful who you call a retard, boy. What are you ? So full of anger & frustration that all you can do is blame others for all the ills of the world.
Those two guys actually accepted your viewpoint and then went on to suggest how using the most popular icons (cricketers and bollywood) can be used to better spread the AIDs awareness message throughout India.
Instead of understanding and appreciating how they had expanded on your 'contribution' and given it value, you call them retards ??
If you don’t have anything else to say other than the common ‘Blame it on the goverment’ gripe which we keep on hearing for free in the trains, buses, rickshaws and at every paanpati and chai stall, from every bhaiyya to every armchair critic on aaj-tak and tehelka, then do us all a favor and SHUT THE FUCK UP !
To meemumbaikar - It is because I am seeing first hand how different rest of India is from aapli ‘developing’ Mumbai that I am able to appreciate better what you said. Just a humble advice from me to you – ‘Don’t argue with fools. They first bring you down to their level and then defeat you with their experience’ ;-)
To the morderator – Sorry for the bad language. I am in UP for past few months. My language might be an effect of my surroundings. But more than that i think it is because i instantly recognise a king-shit asshole when i see one (having been one myself...)

A real good discussion (i still wont term it as a debate) after a long time on katta.
Meemumbaikar, i really like and appreciate your focussed articles and comments.
While most others (including me) are mouthing off the goverment, the politicos, the BMC... well the usual suspects, I find that you get a grip on the focus of the article.
For eg there were general posts on how the traffic situation was getting bad and most of us reacted to the posts in the usual easy way by playing the 'blame-the-authorities' game.
However you have followed it with posts on 'Reduction in minimum BEST fare', 'Reserved lanes for BEST buses'... thus doing a concentrated follow-up on what solutions were being tried out and whether we had given them a try.
In fact for some time i wondered if you were part of PR of Maharashtra Goverment :-) Happy to note that you are private karmachari just like most of us on katta.
Anyway keep up the good work. I for one really appreciate such follow-up articles.
Pavwaala i enjoy your comments too. Occasionally they do make sense and are witty :-).
But take it from an old experienced guy like me - Don't make that con-call just yet. You are way out of your depth and leagues away from the likes of meemumbaikar. May be you will come to half their level after 2-3 pegs but i still wouldn't bet on it.
Nevertheless since you are big on equations i am hoping you will now have understood what meemumbaikar meant when he said :-
Queen + AIDS awareness campaign in West = SRK/Cricketers + AIDS awareness campaign in India
If he still doesn't then maybe you can treat him (and me) in a pub, meemumbaikar ;-)

Do you spoilt IT-waalas have any idea how measley salaries of poor MR's like me are. My entire sal will still be less than just the TA component of your sals.
One treat to you guys in a pub will mean i will have to skip meals for the entire week ;-)
Most i can do is treat you guys to cutting-chai and vada-pav at a road-side thela.
Only problem is it will give rise to the unlikely situation of Pavwaala and the chaiwallah bhaiyya actually ganging up together against me with their common 'Blame-the-goverment-for-everything' argument.
Can you imagine that scene, Pavwaala and a Bhaiyya actually on the same side... hahahahaha

Wasn't there an article in the papers just a couple of days back about how residents of high-rises in posh areas of Mumbai were not allowing volunteers of the Polio drive to enter their societies.
Their stand was that polio was a poor mans disease and they were not going to be affected by it.
If this is true and it is the attitude of the educated elite of India then not even god can save our country :-[
How can we then complain about the poor of UP/Bihar not participating in the huge and sustained anti-polio drive in India.
Incidentally this is a big problem in UP-Bihar. In those states there are Muslim organisations opposing the drive claiming that the vaccine is a conspiracy by USA to destroy their reproduction system !
It is a real shame that a disease for which a PREVENTIVE vaccine (not just a post-treatment medicine) was developed more than 50 years ago still is a problem in India.
We indians are very quick to add religious dimensions to polio, sexual dimensions to AIDS and political dimensions to everything.
Incidentally wouldn't it have been a great idea if AIDS awareness articles, pamplets, ads had been put at all the polio vaccine booths.
Wonder why no one thought of it. Was it the usual non-coordination between the various departments.
Or maybe they did but then were scared that if they put AIDS awareness info at the polio vaccine booths then most indians would shy away from it :-(
I did not read any of your comments, whatever you guys typed has gone on deaf ears to me. Please write some more comments :)
HAPPY AIDS DAY to all specially to meekon and meemumbaikar :) .

I can see that you are already on the road to recovery by using some good ole common sense - "If you can't beat them, join them"
PS: Why are you buggering off to Pune on World Aids Day ? Is there a concert or something :-)
I will grant you one thing though. No place like Pune to get stoned over the weekend ;-)

A "big" Hi to the people of "United Kattaland"
DO you remember the Balbir Pasha Campaign some 3 to 4 years ago.It created quite a stir then.It did not have any stars in it, but it managed to reach to a lot of common people, which has to be the case.

The Health minister Vimal Mundhda and BMC are to be blamed for this.
How ? Why ?
How ? Why ? = For not spreading awareness
Isn't there a saying which goes something like - "You can wake a sleeping person but you cannot wake up a person pretending to sleep"
Discussing sex and related matters is still taboo in india, even in metros (remember all the hulla-gulla on sex education, condom ads etc)
But you have got a valid point.
I know 1-2 ways for creating super-fast awareness about AIDS -
1) Get Shahrukh Khan and his PR team to convey message about AIDS and safe sex
2) Get our cricket team to propogate message about AIDS and safe sex
Question 1 - Will they do it ?
Question 2 - Do you think it will work ?
meemumbaikar r u a retard?
I m sure there must be NGO operating in this areas.what r they doing.Don't you think its their responsibility.
For creating awareness I guess they can put hoardings at
Local medical clinics,Roads(instead of putting those ministers and parties hoardings),NGO workers can go door to door and give information about it.
I agree with u meemumbaikar to solve a problem first we need to talk abt it.
AIDS = Disease
If there is an outbreak of Disease who is reposible for it?
