Maharashtra Government on Monday said it was not perturbed by the suspected outbreak of bird flu in West Bengal, and assured that all necessary precautionary measures were in place.

"We have read the news reports regarding the bird flu out break in West Bengal. There is no official confirmation on whether the deaths were due to the deadly H5N1 virus. However, we have precautionary measures in place to tackle any eventuality," State Animal Husbandry Commissioner Ashish Sharma told reporters.

"We are working as per the plan. We have been taking monthly samples from the regions affected by bird flu. They are being sent to the high security animal disease laboratory (HSADL) in Bhopal for last one-and-a-half years.

All the samples have come negative till now," Sharma said. Under the state's surveillance measures, on an average 1,070 samples are sent to HSADL per month. In 2007-08, 10,241 samples were sent to the laboratory, as against 14,737 in while 2006-07.
