The declaration came from JW Marriott following protests last night after three Marathi actors wearing Kolhapuri chappals were stopped from entering the pub

Tired of protests, JW Marriott authorities yesterday declared they might soon shut down Enigma, the popular pub at the Juhu hotel.

On Saturday, bouncers disallowed actors Sanjay Narvekar, Jitendra Joshi and Santosh Juvekar from entering the pub because they were wearing “unsuitable” footwear. The pub offered them used pairs of shoes to enter.

Though they accepted and entered the pub, they stayed only for 45 minutes, as they were uncomfortable wearing the used shoes.

Sushant Shelar, who was with the actors at the time of the incident, said, “Hindi artistes are greeted without any qualms. This is clear discrimination.” He added that if women were allowed to wear open footwear to the pub, why were men being stopped from doing so.

According to Juvekar, “Kolhapuri chappal is traditional Maharashtrian footwear. Giving us worn shoes as replacement was as good as making someone wear used underwear.” The protesters demanded that the management tender an unconditional apology to the artists for the insult meted out to them.
