In Mumbai, on Juhu Tara road, two women were groped outside a five-star hotel on New Year’s Eve. However, the Santa Cruz police denied receiving any complaint. Witnesses said a group of boys, who were drunk after partying on Monday night, committed the act. This is the second such incident in the past few years. Earlier, a tabloid had carried pictures of a young woman being molested at the Gateway by a few youths. Is this city unsafe?

I was watching this news on tv yesterday where the police commisioner was telling media that u guys are blowing this incident out of proportion this is like any other offense that takes place in every gali every nukad.
I mean cmon yaar 40-50 ka mob molested 2 women that too in a crowded place and Mumbai police is expecting us to treat this as just like any other offense.
Of course it’s getting unsafe for women. If you want to stop this we have take this things seriously and not like just another offense.
This is the 1st disturbing case for a 31st night. Every year mumbai people either go out of mumbai or stay with family cause they know it will be too crowded. I'm 100% sure that a person born and brought up in mumbai won do such things so I plainly blame it on North Indians. If they arrest those 40 people, you will see that 39 people will be from north and 1 person will be a mumbaikar who will stop them from doing this.

'This sort of thing happens in all gallis and nukkads' - Police Commisioner
'The offenders should be sent to the gallows' - Malaika Arora Khan
Some blogger writes - 'What were those couples thinking of, roaming the streets at 1 AM completely sloshed. Would they have dared to do it in NY ?'
Another writes - '40 people and only 1 of them will be a mumbaikar'
If statistics given by another blogger are correct then there are at least 40% maharashtrians anywhere, anytime in Mumbai. So statistically speaking do we assume that there should be about 15-16 maharashtrian molesters in that crowd ?
Instead of making blanket statements shouldn't the analysis and post mortem be done after the culprits are caught.
To the commisioner - Yes Sir, you are right to an extent. Such crimes do happen many times in gallis and nukkads. Your police force is there to try and prevent it in the first place. If you can't do that then it is your job is to try and catch the culprits.
To the celebs - Please think about what image of women you project when you do your item numbers
What Mumbai and mumbaikars don't want are blanket statements being made by all and sundry self-appointed guardians of Mumbai and its culture.

Of course Police Commissioner is right that such incidents take place in every galli every nukkad !
After all we must understand that our cops have more important day-to-day things to do like keeping watch on Bollywood items, collecting hafta, doing mandavli between builders & underworld, arranging fake passports ...
Small incidents like this one distract them and increase their paper-work leading to stress.

From Hindustan times article -
1) Ravindra Shukla alias Bunty, 27
He runs a sandwich stall at Vile Parle and lives in Kandivli.
2) Nilesh Bhyatkar, 18
Failed SSC, father does paint jobs in buildings. The family lives at Siddhivinayak building, Vile Parle. He surrendered after his parents and neighbours held a meeting on the building premises and decided to hand him over.
If Bipin Bihari becomes the Commissioner, I think all of us should migrate to Bihar :)

There was another equally tragic incident.A car accident at marine Drive early on Tuesday i.e on 1st wherein Four of the six friends were killed after their Ford Ikon, which police said was speeding at about 200 kmph on Marine Drive, crashed into a stationary BMC dumper near Taraporewala Aquarium. Another person, a BMC labourer, also died on the spot after the car hit him while trying to come to a stop before a traffic signal.
All this boys were in age of 17-20.All college-goers.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Harish Baijal said the boys were drunk but the families denied the charge saying "Nobody in our family consumes alcohol."

Also initialy police made flat statement that the car was going at 200 KPH !!
How could they know that without any proper investigation by crash experts ??
Do they even know the top speed of a Ford Ikon ? or its pick up ? or the distance it needs to reach that speed ?
As one of the police officer himself said they are reluctant to file FIRs because it increases paperwork. Then they are reluctant to investigate it thoroughly probably because that also needs paperwork.
Mumbai police should Greenpeace award for trying to eliminate paperwork and saving trees.

Usually i agree with pawwala on many things. But not this time.
It is all good to say Mumbaikars wont do such things. That is so typical - everyone always blames other people for whatever goes wrong. My own group is never wrong, right?
Are you saying there are not 70 assholes borh and brought up in Mumbai? Of course there are. There may be 70000 sssholes.
Mumbai is a great city - but people who are born here are not direct imports from heaven. We don't have invisible wings or halos.
Are you saying all crime in Mumbai will vanish if north indians go away? :D If that really can be proven, I am all for that. If that does not happen, maybe get rid of south indians. then maybe east indians. Come on man. Be realistic.
The best societies in the world too have crime against women.
I am in Mumbai for 15 years now. Since the day I landed here, I know about guys groping women in trains. Of course some of them are Mumbaikars!
True pride is when you can look at the crap in our middle, and try to clean it. Its easy to blame others. Christians blame Islam, Hindus blame Islam, Shias blame Sunnis, Sunnis blame Shias, together they blame Jews. What nonsense.

Our politicians and media appointed moral guardians are very good at them. But i think that any average mumbaikar like you or me is much more intelligent and know better.
Look at the list of the arrested persons (who have been released on bail). Don't you think it is a fairly accurate representation of Mumbai's population...

Yes.
Look at the list. Everyone is there. This is not about cultures or community.
Have you thought about how in every war, or major rioting anywhere in the world, richer women are always raped?
Its standard male behavior. A lot of us have learnt to be civilized, so its not obvious. But there are many whose basic nature (men have been violent for millions of years, and have raped for millions of years) comes out when there is a chance.
I think North India has many problems - but in this case and in most cases, we only have ourselves to blame for still not generating respect for women in men.

perfect ashthipanjar jee. I may be wrong but most of the time the reason behind this kind of violence with women is not seeking sexual favour all the time but most of the time I see a mentality of possesion ,ownership ,a belief that men knws the best and women are supposed to sliently obey or just face consequence.
Men cannot take a women retaliating. And if she does like in this case one of the women swore back at those men who were passing comments on them. This is how they made her pay.
I see only one way of reducing this kind of violence against women is cracking this strong belief not only in millions of men but even in us that Men are born to rule,to Own,to Control and to be obeyed.

Hi Funaholic. I think you must be a female.
Because you seem to have not lost the focus that first and last this was a crime by males against females (ownership, perversion whatever the reason may be) and needs to be treated accordingly.
I am very sure that to the victims the caste or religion of the molestors didn't come into mind when they were being attacked or afterwards.
They had been assualted sexually. Period.
Pavwala i might agree with you that such behavior is seen more often in certain communities than others.
However that comes later and at another level.
Imagine if you were walking with your sister and she was groped from behind. Would you first ask the molestor about his community? And if he seemed to be a christian would you ask your sister to offer him the other cheek as well (pun fully intended)!

A very lame statement by the Police Commisioner. Cause woman security should be number 1 priority in Mumbai.

In NY, the Cops are all over the place especially for New Years and people wouldnt dare to do such thing in public.
