The Lalbaug mandal that organises the city’s biggest Ganeshotsav pandal has used Rs 25 lakh collected as donations during last year’s festival to set up a free library. It will be located in two rooms provided by the BMC at Peru Chawl near Lalbaug market. Named after Swatantraveer Savarkar, it will be inaugurated on Sunday.
The library, set up by Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal (LRSGM), has 12,000 books. Organisers promise that if somebody asks for a book that is not in their collection, it will be made available within 48 hours.
While it will keep popular fiction and non-fiction titles, the library will primarily stock books required for competitive exams such as the Union Public Service Commission, Maharashtra Public Service Commission and tests conducted to recruit workers for nationalised banks. There will also be books for medical, engineering, management and other degree courses and a special section for schoolchildren.
