She is remembered as the fiery Queen of Jhansi, a warrior who carried the torch of nationalism, born into a conservative Maharashtrian family.
Today, the Maharashtrian legacy lives on in this close-knit Jhansi colony. And from the heart of Little Maharashtra, a question comes for Raj Thackeray, the man whose 'Me Mumbaikar' campaign has targeted North Indians.
''If the people of UP attack us, will Raj Thackeray save us? If our children are attacked abroad, who will save them?'' said Shivram Khanwalkar, Resident, Jhansi.

He said that Maharashtrians outside Maharashtra are loyal to the state in which they reside. They integrate with the local culture.
So there is no question of them feeling like outsiders and being under threat
Well played :-)

It is impossible to expect metro and Marathi culture at the same time. Mumbai is a much bigger city, and more like an international metro. Either take it an enjoy the good and the bad, or end it and be a smaller city like other state capitals.

What do you mean by JUNK from UP and BIHAR?? Are you trying to say that people from Maharashtra are good enough? I think your just being impulsive. Do not forget that they belong to the same country as you do!!
Marathi and Non-Marathi maybe used by the media but the segregation has been created by Shiv Sena themselves. We can get listen to lot of those words in all of the speeches given by the Thackeray family. Today, the Sena is not pointing fingers at the non-North Indian public. I am a non-Maharashtrian and have spent almost all my life here and I know that no one can touch me in this city ..... but somewhere deep under there is a feeling that all this may also happen to people from my community/ state/ region too.

This guy on the same show made a statement saying that one taxi/auto permit is used by multiple "North Indian" drivers, which is illegal. I agree to this ..... but as per my observations .... the majority of the people in the law inforcing agency i.e. the Regional Transport Office (RTO) which is responsible for such things not happening are "Maharashtrians"???
Please do not misunderstand me .... I am not against any community. I am just trying to express my opinion with respect to the statement made by the gentleman.
Funaholic, good points. But I am not talking specifically about this issue.
My point is more general.
A lot of Maharashtrians feel bad that outsiders come to Mumbai and make it big, while they don't.
Forget this specific issue.
My point is, if its a metro, we cannot have ownership over it. Metros have only one owner, and its money. Legally yes, but practically it doesn't work.
Also, why do UP politicians try their stunts here etc - they will try their stunts. Again, legally they can do anything. They can use their right of assembly to do anything. That is a fact. We don't like it, we dont want SP planning to takeover Mumbai, but if we tackle individual issues like that, our grandchildren too will be on the same track.
There is only one big issue - there are several external cultures trying to overtake the Marathi culture in Mumbai.
1. Bollywood culture.
2. SP-BSP culture
3. Western culture
We have been fighting against one of them today, another yesterday, another one day after. So its south indians in the 1970s, english signboards in 1990s, Valentines Day in 2000, .... it never ends.
Thats why Im saying, make a simple choice. Maharashtrian Mumbai or cosmopolitan Mumbai. We should decide what we want and stick to it. This constantly wanting the best of everything and the worst of nothing is a never ending drama.
Chennai, Kolkata etc remain culturally rooted because they have made that choice. Dont want the big metro, want culture and language. We havent decided. Thats the problem.

I do not think that bollywood as such is doing any wrong to the Marathi theatre/film industry (I may be wrong). Bollywood could probably help if the Marathi theatre/film industry becomes more serious about making Marathi movies/plays and if there are more people who watch them. Unfortunately the masses(marathi or non-marathi) want to watch more of Aishwarya Rai than Smita Patil.

As a non-Maharashtrian, what would you know about the sentiments of the Marathi speaking people? That too as a North India, you probably can't speak any Marathi, still less read/write it. If you cannot speak and understand a language-how do you understand the sentiments of those people? If you don't know Marathi, you can't understand the sentiments of the Maharashtrians. Period. You can't understand our society, our culture and our emotions. Plus as a North Indian, you might be having the smugness that North Indians, that contempt for cultures other than their own.
Have you-or any of our non-Maharashtrian brihaspathis-ever tried to understand what the Maharashtrians are feeling in Mumbai or Maharashtra? Have you ever even tried to understand that we have seen our culture, language and traditions DIE in front of us, in a period spanning 50 years? That no other group has been forced to speak an alien language in its capital and has been forced to keep its own language at home? Has this happened in TN,WB, KL, KA, AP? So how can you say that Marathi concerns are no different from anywhere else? The situation itself is so different-how can you say "no different."
Has Bengali died in Kolkata
Has Telugu died in Hyderabad?
Has Malayalam died in Cochin?
Has Kannada died in Bangalore?
Secondly, people keep saying reservation in jobs is wrong. I would like to point out to these nationalists: 85 % of the class C/class D jobs are RESERVED for Andhras in Andhra Pradesh. Yes, by law reserved.
Asthipanjar and others: you write well. But people like you and our fellow brihaspathis in the English media don't try to understand the sentiments of Kannadigas in Bangalore or Maharashtrians in Maharashtra. They send people who don't even know the language-and those who don't the language-what will they know of the sentiments, feelings and worries of the Maharashtrian people?
The problem with these guys is that they never try to actually understand what the real issue with the Maharashtrians is. They are only capable of either demonizing them ( a la NDTV) or ridiculing them (a la Suketu Mehta.) They are unable to look at them as human beings, as people with concerns, legitimate concerns. There is no attempt to look at them as human beings and try to appreciate what they are saying, see the good points and criticize the bad points. They just cannot see the Maharashtrians as "people"-they are always caricatured in some way, ridiculed in others. This breeds resentment, as we are well aware when people are making fun of us. Slowly this resentment builds up and occasionally lets off steam. Again the resentment builds up as the English media caricatures Marathis-and the cycle continues again.

exactly. even i am for a purely culturally peaceful mumbai.
let mumbai be a place where there is a linguistic majority, more cultural events, focus on marathi etc...
my feeling is, the average maharashtrian does not want mumbai to be this fundu cosmo metro city.
i have been telling people for a long time that mumbai right now is not like the rest of maharashtra at all. And its making eveyone uneasy.
The moment maharashtrians make it very clear that they want mumbai to be a maharahtrian city, the politicians have no choice other than to discourage industries and jobs that will bring in outsiders, and encourage only those industries that focus on locals.
so far even a raj doesnt have the guts to stand up and be clear like limin and satvya. Say it out loud, and it will happen.
And then we saw what happened.. everyone jumped in shouting themselves :-)
You mentioned Miscommunication. hmm.. how about something like below
Marathi Media - Raj Thackeray is telling people who have lived all their lives in Mumbai that "Consider yourself to belong to Mumbai"
Hindi Media - Raj Thackeray is telling people who have lived all their lives in Mumbai that "Don't Consider that Mumbai belongs to you"
:-}
Allow me to use the words of a great politician, J F Kennedy, but with a slight twist
"Don't consider that Mumbai belongs to you. Consider that you belong to Mumbai"
And before anyone misreads my communication let me say that I do !
It is why i call myself 'meemumbaikar'
:-D

i agree with vikas. You are mistaking me when u think I am a north indian :D I am just trying to get our own thoughts very clear on this.
I am saying, if we want mumbai to be culturally maharashtrian, we should insist on it like kannadigas do, like mallus do, like bengalis do.
instead, we often keep talking metro culture on one hand and marathi culture on another. You cannot have both together. I am happy with whatever the choice is. Right now, in Mumbai, it is difficult to even see Marathi culture - and I will be happy to see it come alive!

As a North Indian, you probably have contempt for Marathi, as a bais language. This is common with most North Indians. Have you ever even tried to learn our language? If you can't speak Marathi, how can you be so contemptous? You may not be but I get that feeling. Those who don't know Marathi cannot comment on Maharashtrians.
Asthipanjar, NIndians are flooding in becuase of poverty. Not because they have got jobs here and are coming here to take up these jobs. This is not Dubai/UAE. They are coming because of the sheer backwardness of those places. This is the real issue-they are not coming here to take up jobs or work here. Once they arrive, they throw themselves into any kind of work they can get. Naturally, they are willing to work for 50 % less-70 % less. Hence, as long as UP/Bihar remain backward, this problem will continue. This has nothing to do with industry at all, so removing industry is meaningless. People are not coming here because of any industry.

Industry leads to direct jobs and indirect jobs. Street vendors, taxis, grocery shops, and small jobs associates with them.

I agree with a lot of things that you said Vikas. But not all of it.
I know of a lot of people who are non-marathi but can speak marathi better than most maharashtrian people can. So just by speaking marathi one cannot understand the sentiments of maharashtrians.
I agree that a non-Maharashtrians cannot understand the sentiments of Maharashtrians. Because it is not just about the language, its about the culture and the tradition. I also acknowledge the fact that the culture and tradition in Maharashtra is dieing. But my dear friend who is responsible for keeping up the culture? isn't it the people who belong to that community. How can people who are not from your community steal your culture or be responsible for its killing?? Why should people from other communities be responsible for keeping your culture and tradition alive???
If you are proud about Marathi, then why do you not speak it all the time? Why do you speak to people in hindi or english? Some people may riducule you but then even you would do it when you hear 2 "Bhayyas" speaking in Bhojpuri. In that case, whats the difference between u and them?
Today the Marathi cinema/theatre is in distress because even the Marathi people probably do not want to watch it?? If you yourself are not able to accept your culture, tradition and language, why should anybody else do it my friend?
I am a non-Maharashtrian but I am proud to say that I can read, write and speak Marathi. Just as I am proud of knowing my mother toungue and the National language Hindi.
Tell me this my dear friend, you and also I do not like when someone calls a Maharashtrian a "Ghati" but I am sure that you will be amused and will find great pride while calling a north Indian a "Bhayya"
Today, companies in Bangalore are having a tough time recruiting people. That is because there are hardly any local people and the outsiders are reluctant to come to B'lore. Which means, companies may move out of B'lore??

lostwanderer "But somewhere deep under there is a feeling that all this may also happen to people from my community/ state/ region too." Speaking about insecurity .... I want to tell you about a small incidence. I was speaking to this Maharashtrian friend of mine. Not a very intellectual person and may not represent the whole of the marathi community but can be considered as a layman. I asked him about the situation and what he thought about what was happening. He was very unhappy about the voilence and he said that it was not correct to beat up a common man. But he strongly believed in Raj and his ideology. I was not sure about his belief so I questioned him further. Finally he made a statement, he said "I like the Sena but I know that the Sena's way is not correct. But I still support the Sena because if I do not, one day the outsiders will throw us Maharashtrians out of Mumbai." Although he did not have any reasons as to how that would be possible!! This my friend is the insecurity!! which the Sena has put into the minds of a common Maharashtrian down the years!! Which according to me is IMPOSSIBLE!!

Bollywood/Films & Mr.Big B and the problem starts here, these people take there dreams & land up in Mumbai and when there dreams get shattered most of them start doing odd jobs or get into crime.
Why not switch not only Bollywood, shift the entire north indian owned industries, companies and factories to north India somewhere!
exactly. even i am for a purely culturally peaceful mumbai.
let mumbai be a place where there is a linguistic majority, more cultural events, focus on marathi etc...
my feeling is, the average maharashtrian does not want mumbai to be this fundu cosmo metro city.
i have been telling people for a long time that mumbai right now is not like the rest of maharashtra at all.
Say it out loud, and it will happen.
i agree with vikas.
Asthipanjar;
Please stop this contempt.
People are not coming here because of any industry.
haha vikas, you are too insecure. where did u see any contempt? If anything, I am more contemptous about north indian culture.
all i am saying is, once we are clear on what we want, we will get it.
industry in mumbai, and poverty in UP/ Bihar are bringing north indians (and everyone else) to mumbai. You think they are here to see the beaches?
My brother, Mumbai was not built in a day ...... it has taken years to make Mumbai what it is.
Kiranjee Hum dono Mein Ek Aur Baat Common hai Jo bolte hai uske peeche ek motive hota hai :-D and its not bcoz we cannot control our emotions. Raj is not an Idiot to make statement like this and get a bad publicity especially at this stage when he is trying to build a party. I m sure there is sm motive. He is been in this game for long time now.
2)Guys If u have read my comments on other post posted by vikas or even in that New year molestation case I had said that if marathis are failing in giving best from their side they will suffer and they shld not blame non-marathis.
3)Then why I called northies JUNK today well from past 2-3 days due to few Raj Mns members attacked few NorthIndians Suddenly for everybody Marathis from Mumbai have become Goonda ,Suddenly, Haven't you been staying with these same people for so many years now? we all know na that its pure political rada. We common people, press everybody knows this .They why marathi and non marathi culuture ? Thats what I m unhappy abt.
Asthi “If we seriously care about Marathi culture in Mumbai, we should decide to end this metro business once and for all.”
What do u mean by this "marathi culuture" wants to end Mumbai's mix culuture. The way you are summarising "marathi culuture" for wht happened in past few days. Now that hurts. What’s wrong in me summarizing entire Bhaiya culuture as "JUNK". Your comments are due 2 insecurity aur mera impulsive attitude. what u think abt this kiranjee.
lostwanderer "But somewhere deep under there is a feeling that all this may also happen to people from my community/ state/ region too." Right Being a marathi I m equally insecure lostwanderer. bcoz in this country even if I m marathi, tamil, Punjabi, catholic, hindu, muslim ,bhaiya ,etc. I M INSECURE why bcoz I M A COMMON MAN. That’s the only religion guys that we all belong to.
U knw guys we should be insecure but not bcoz we are marathis and non-marathis but as "mumbaikars". Bcoz mumbai is housefull now boss. I feel u will agree here as mumbaikar. Her capacity of welcoming Immigrations is over. This city and state already has its own prob.
I m bored shit itna kabhi mein exam mein bhi nahi likha yaar :) We all luv Mumbai forget abt politicians atleast lets keep faith in Each other as Mumbaikars what say.
Speaking about insecurity .... Which according to me is IMPOSSIBLE!!
funaholic, i wasnt talking about marathi culture that way - I meant real marathi culture (not the beatings etc).
Rest, i agree. Mumbai is houseful.
Thats why I am saying, if Mumbai keeps developing, more people will come and strain the infrastructure even more. So stop that. Mumbai has to stop its growth till it fixes the infrastructure, thats the only real solution. Or, we can keep asking for things like identity cards which will not happen.
