The state government on Wednesday suggested that 'zero-tolerance' method be adopted in cases of drunken driving. While hearing the PIL initiated by the High Court through its suo motu action in the Alistair Pereira hit-and-run case, Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Ranjana Desai have now given the state government four weeks to formulate suggestions in road accident cases.

“Like New York ex-mayor Rudy Guiliani's 'zero-tolerance' policy against crime, we need to have a zero-tolerance policy for cases of drunken driving”, Kadam said. He told the court, that a police official with a doctorate in sociology will have to be consulted before putting these suggestions in place.
