Mumbai: A Worli-based social organisation in Mumbai, has given a clarion call asking its members to avoid wearing traditional wrap around, locally called "Lungi" and instead start wearing pants.
The main contention stated behind the step is to motivate organisation's members who are from Uttar Pradesh to wear pants so that local authorities take them seriously.
"Lungi Choro, Pant Pehno" (Give up wrap around, wear pants) campaign is being carried out here by Mohammed Abdul Hamid Yuva Pratishthan (MAHYP), the social organisation.
"The Lungi is comfortable to wear while going to sleep but most of our members wear it even during the day projecting a bad image about our people," says Akhlaque Khan, founder of Mohammed Abdul Hamid Yuva Pratishthan.

Now it is said that wear pants instead of lungies. I think days will come when they will say ladies to wear jeans and t-shirt instead of saries and punjabi dress.....
This is what come days will be...
and now also I see many hindu marriages they wear cout and pant instead of shearwaanies. which is something somewhere is bad for our culture....

hehe.. if we think about our culture, we are in big trouble! Punjabi dress, salwar etc came to India with Mughals...
Also sherwani too. I think it is not indian at all. If we want to be Indian, almost all states in India will have to wear some version of the lungi I think.
What was maharashtrian attire some 200-300 years back? Any idea?
This is a very interesting topic -- trying to find out what we were wearing then.

I don't think so. Lungies won't go out of fashion. What will happen to madrasis and their typically action of lifting the lungi before they start the fight. You can't retake those shots with pants.

I guess even web media are starting to go overboard with their reporting.... Some small community organisation asks its members to switch its ways of dressing and Sify says 'Mumbai to give up Lungi for pants'... is this called the 'Aajtak' effect ?
