Likening cricket star Sachin Tendulkar to the legendary Sir Don Bradman, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday made a "strong case" for bestowing knighthood on one of the great cricketers of the world.
"I am sure people recognise that just as Sir Don Bradman and others got the honours as honorary knighthoods for work they did for cricket, for sport and for extending cultural links and sporting links between countries and across the world, there is a strong case for those who make huge contribution as to sports," Brown, who is on a two-day official visit to India, said here.
"Sachin Tendulkar is one of the great cricketers of the world," he said addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Some people are way above titles and awards except those which their own people confer on them out of pure love.

One more achievement for sachin when he is playing active cricket. The others have got it after they had retired.
He already has a stand named after him in wankhede stadium. By the way is "Sir" like a bharat ratna in England?

Knighthoods were always political in nature - Service to the crown on england and all that stuff
As recently as the 70s and 80s there have been controversies about knighthoods with incidents of bribery and knighthoods-for-favor, knighthoods-for-cash etc
I accept that cricket was a game invented in england but I personally would not like Sachin (or any other Indian) to accept the knighthood as it implies service to the british empire (??) and the crown of england..
Somehow it just doesn't seem right to me after knowing about Tilak, Savarkar, Chapekar, ...
Bharat Ratna was conceived with a slightly different view.. although it is in danger of going down the same road if our great politicians succeed in hijacking (and fixing) the nominations.
I would have been much happier if the powers-that-be had directly conferred the award on him rather than other having to suggest his nomination and lobby for it... and other nominees being politicians like Mulayam Singh Yadav..
So i would rather have everyone, including the English, say 'Shri Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar' over 'Sir S. R. Tendulkar' anyday, anywhere.
